The
Dallow estate is a deprived and underprivileged area where a fifth
of all the community are on benefits and which has a multicultural
community - 48 per cent of the population are from minority groups.
The
Voices project extends right across the country with all BBC local
radio station and Where I Live websites selecting an area on their
region that has had problems or is known to be "a problem area".
BBC
Three Counties Radio and BBC Beds, Herts and Bucks are hoping to
be able help the substantial work going on at present to improve
the area.
We
hope to help local people develop the Ferndale Road allotment area
and support the completion of the new community centre which is
due to be finished later this summer.

"Most
importantly, we want to provide a platform for the people of Dallow
to have a voice," said Lee Agnew, Voices producer.
"We
want to connect with the community in the area, help them how we
can and give everyone the opportunity to have their voice heard,
whoever they might be."
The
idea behind the Voices project is to establish links with those
chosen communities and work with and encourage people living there
to tell their stories. Stories of what life is really like for them
on a day to day basis - their hopes and struggles, families, cultures,
faiths and aspirations. Real life stories, no gloss!
Everyone
has a story to tell, and Voices will be firmly rooted in the community
listening.
The
project will be aired through different media, bringing coverage
through the radio, on television and the Internet.
Voices
is more than what you hear or see on the BBC, it's also about making
things happen in the chosen community. From physical transformations
to practical workshops, all creating new opportunities and a chance
for people to meet and share experiences and mutual interests.
