The term pantomime in most other parts of the world refers to the silent art of mime.

The art of English pantomime is quite different and much more boisterous.

Originating in the 17th century, but more closely associated with burlesque during the reign of Queen Victoria, it gradually developed into its current form - a comic play based on a fairy tale and performed at Christmas.

Traditionally, the hero is a young woman, comic characters (usually men) are dressed in drag and the baddie is always booing and hiss-worthy.

The play invites audience participation, actions and responses ("Oh, no it doesn't!" "Oh yes it does!").

The panto is a quintessentially English Christmas experience - not to be missed!

Following his much publicised health problems, the popular former boxer Frank Bruno has confirmed that he will be at the Wycombe Swan this Christmas, taking on the role of the genie of the lamp in Aladdin.

Speaking through a statement released last week he said:

"I will definitely be appearing in the show. I have never missed panto in the last ten years. It is my favourite time of year and this year Aladdin has been especially written for me."

"So there is no way I will not be there and no way I would let down all my fans."

Earlier this year, the ex-heavyweight champion received treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Essex after being sectioned.

At the time, friends of Bruno described him as having been depressed for some time, following a series of personal setbacks including divorce.

As one of Britain's best loved sports personalities he received hundreds of goodwill messages from fans during his illness, something which he is enormously grateful for.

"I have really appreciated the thousands of messages of support" he said.

"If you wrote to me personally, sorry I haven't been able to reply. I was overwhelmed by everyone's kindness."

"I'm feeling really well now and I can't wait for rehearsals to start" he added.

Appearing alongside Frank this Christmas will be Sophie Lawrence as Aladdin, Christopher Hackett as the evil Abanazar, Barry Hester as Widow Twanky and everyone's favourite bear, Sooty.

With flying carpets and amazing special effects, this year's panto promises to be great, but if you can't wait until then to see Frank, you can catch him when he turns on the Christmas lights in High Wycombe on Thursday 13 November.
