ESSENTIAL INFO

Guides are usually aged between ten and 14, although some Guides like to stay until they are older. Any girl over the age of ten can become a Guide as long as she is able to understand, and wants to make, the Guide Promise.

What is the Baden Powell Challenge?
It's the ultimate Girl Guiding challenge! To begin your ten challenges you must have made your promise, achieved two interest badges and hold your two year badge.

The Challenge consists of ten clauses that must be completed within twelve months; there are five topics to chose from and you must do at least one clause from each.

The different topics include:
Healthy Lifestyle
Celebrating Diversity
World Issues
Skills And Relationships
Global Awareness

Challenge Weekend
When you have completed all ten challenges you are invited to a Baden-Powell Challenge Weekend. During the weekend you meet up with other Guides who have also completed their ten clauses. Once you have completed the weekend and have all your challenges signed off you meet with your District Commissioner where you are presented with a certificate and a pin badge. It is a great experience, giving you the chance to meet new people and it gives you a new perspective on guiding.

Guides.
What shall we write?

Theme
Last night we met eachother for the first time, and all eleven Guides stayed at Woodcroft Guide Centre, based in Luton.

The theme for our weekend is media. We have to design and produce a web page, give a power point presentation and a produce a special edition of 'Beds Buzz' which is a news letter aimed at the Guiding community in Bedfordshire.

First night
Our first night together was great - we all had to get into groups of four and decided which part of the project we were going to participate in. Then we had dinner which consisted of pasta and bolognaise with a side salad and for pudding, we had a choice of chocolate cake or syrup sponge with either squirty cream or custard and all of that was very nice if we do say so ourselves!.

Out and about
Today we visited Luton Town Football Club where we watched, supported, whistled and chatted up the under 19’s squad (especially number 5!) then we went back to the centre for lunch.

During our lunch Hilary from the local Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice came to speak to us about the organisation and answer any questions that we had.

Guides.
Writing for the web!

After lunch we made our way to the BBC Three Counties Radio Studios and saw how the sports programmes are broadcast and how a web page for the Beds Herts and Bucks website is produced - then with a little help from Jan we wrote this piece for the web!

Tomorrow we have to be up very early to give a presentation of our project to an invited audience of our parents and Guide Leaders -then after all the hard work we finally get to go home!

If you would like to see what we have achieved this week feel free to go to www.bedsguiding.org.uk and have a look around.
