Los
Pacaminos line-up:
Drew
Barfield:
Guitar / Vocals. From A&M signings The Keys and The Big
Heat, his song-writing credits include Go West, Joe Jackson,
Paul Young and Level 42.
Melvyn
Duffy: Pedal steel. Probably the finest young pedal steel
guitar player in Britain, his credits include Jimmy Nail,
Leo Sayer, and Deana Carter while his most recent tour was
with Robbie Williams.
Steve
Greetham: Bass / Vocals. Has worked with Joan Armatrading,
Paul Young, Julia Fordham and Chris De Burgh.
Matt
Irving: Keyboards / Accordion / Vocals. Has played with
a whole host of artists including Lords Of The New Church,
Paul Young, Squeeze, Chris Rea, Jools Holland, Roger Waters
and Manfred Mann.
Jamie
Moses: Guitar / Vocals. An accomplished session player,
hes worked
with The Pretenders, Mike And The Mechanics, Chaka Khan, Gary
Barlow, Mica Paris, Tony Hadley, Pete Townsend, Karl Wallinger,
Paul Rodgers, Curtis
Stiegers and Dave Stewart - to name but a few.
Mark
Pinder: Drums. Several renowned cult acts claimed Marks
services
including the Vampire Bats From Lewisham and Zaine Griff before
he headed
off to join Paul Young and Alison Moyet.
Paul
Young: Guitar / Vocals. Needs little introduction
from
his days with Q Tips to his number one solo hits Wherever
I Lay My Hat and Come Back And Stay, as
well as Every Time You Go Away, his hit albums
and his
collaboration with top Italian star Zucchero, Paul has always
been loved for his unique vocal style and great personality.

For
a number of women, this review will mean something particular -
for others it will simply wash over their heads. Anyway, imagine
you're a teenager and you love Busted. Like REALLY love them - with
posters of Matt, Charlie and James plastered all over your bedroom
- and you go to see them at Wembley and simply drool.
Then
20 years past and you find yourself, on a wet Wednesday in an intimate
venue in High Wycombe, watching them give a brilliant performance
in another band - and then - SWOON - you get to meet them.

Young at last meets Katy Lewis |
Thus
it was with Paul Young. Nearly 20 years ago, we lined up with hoardes
of hysterical girls at Wembley to watch him sing the old classics
- Wherever I Lay My Hat and Everytime You Go Away - complete with
tears of joy and youthful lusting, despite him being just a distant
idol on a distant stage.
And
cut to 2004 - and with somewhat more reservation (but still quite
a deal of lusting) we were among a handful of very excited women
who got to meet the Luton-born star after the gig - and it made
our year.
Actually
meeting the man himself was the perfect end to a fantastic evening
of great music and happy dancing.
Bluechip
The
gig opened with young support act Bluechip doing a good job of getting
the crowd warmed up. Filled with youthful spirit, they were so obviously
chuffed to be performing that their enthusiasm made it hard to criticise
them. The group from Chesham High School had a big fan base in the
audience - and rightly so.
Lead
singer Laura Harding had an enviable voice but seemed a little nervous
which I think led to her smiling when the lyrics of the song didn't
call for happy emotions. Overall, Bluechip made a good impression
though.
And
then, the main act. Los Pacaminos served up a tasty selection of
Tex Mex numbers, interspersed with a few gags and rounds of tequila.
The
story behind the name Los Pacaminos is that the band made it up
to sound Mexican but also sound like pack 'em in! That sense of
humour was brought to the gig - and they certainly didn't take themselves
too seriously at any point.
It
was obvious the band were having a hoot playing the music and their
enthusiasm was infectious. The seven-piece group shared the main
vocals - and by all impressions were enjoying themselves on stage
as much as the audience were enjoying watching them.

Pacaminos |
There
were fast numbers, catchy rhythms and then a mellow few ballards
to bring the mood down - and it ended with a rousing rendition of
Woolly Bully.
There
was a great mix of their own numbers and covers with my favourite
being Do We Really Want The Same Thing which prompted me to splash
out on the CD which has been blasting out of the car at every journey
since.
There was no need for Wherever I Lay My Hat - it was obvious that
Paul Young has moved on and is having fun with Los Pacaminos - and
the joy of the band making music filled the room.
There's
only one more recommendation I would give for the band: some day
when I win the National Lottery and I'm having a bash to end all
bashes, there's only one band I want to get the party up and dancing.
Watch out Los Pacaminos, if my numbers ever come up, I'll definitely
be booking you.
