Daredevil - dare you see it?
    Ben Affleck.
    The leather clad superhero

Pure comic book fantasy as a man blinded by radioactive waste which enhances his remaining senses, fights crime as an acrobatic martial arts superhero.

Sarah Dobbs from Sandy reviews the comic book fantasy for us...

Ben Affleck in head to toe red leather? Surely a hit? Sadly, not quite.

By day, Matt Murdock is a pro bono lawyer. By night he's a crime fighting, karate-kicking superhero whose senses are heightened from the radioactive waste that blinded him as a child.

    Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner.
Jennifer Garner gets to grips with Ben Affleck.

So what do we have? Well, there's the blind yet capable hero, haunted by the murder of his boxer father. Then there's the super rich love interest Elektra (Jennifer Garner) and her super kicks. Throw in a couple of pyscho villains called Bullseye and Kingpin and you ought to have a super film. Right? Again, not quite.

The use of a blind protagonist is welcome for its positive approach to 'disability' and Mark Steven Johnson's direction is, thankfully, gritty not glossy. But this is where the film becomes schizophrenic. On the one hand it's trying to break the slick Hollywood mould. On the other, the boy gets girl - boy loses girl - boy tries to win girl back love story is sickeningly formulaic.

In conclusion, average performances all round and the thin plot will give you déjà vu (think Batman). See it only if you're a fan of action or Affleck and Garner. Go on, I dare you.
