    RESULTS >>

It's stalemate across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire with none of the local councils changing hands.

Labour bucked ther national trend in Bedford by gaining three seats, but with the emergence of several smaller parties the council remains hung.

After eight recounts, the count in the Middleton ward of Milton Keynes eventually resulted in success for Liberal Democrat Samuel Crooks, who defeated Conservative candidate David Bint by only two votes. So with none of the seats changing hands, the Liberal Demcorats retained their slim majority.

In Watford, the Liberal Democrats stormed home taking ten out of the twelve seats up for election. The Labour group Leader, Andy Head, was one of the four Labour councillors to lose their seats. The Lib Dems now control 26 of the 36 seats on the council.

In St Albans, the Lib Dems fell just one short of taking a clear majority. It means the council remains in No Overall Control although the Lib Dems remain the largest party gaining an extra five seats. The party also kept hold of Three Rivers.

The Conservatives strengthened their majority in Welwyn Hatfield, North Herts and South Beds and remained the same in Hertsmere and Broxbourne, where they saw off challenge from the BNP.

The European Parliament results will not be through until Sunday.

    LOCAL ELECTIONS

    Bedford Borough Council
Labour bucked the national trend in Bedford by gaining three seats.
However the council remains in No Overall Control.

The Conservatives comfortably retained their hold on Hertsmere Borough Council, but failed to make any gains.

    Milton Keynes Council
Not a single seat changed hands in Milton Keynes, enabling the Liberal Democrats to retain their slim majority of the council. But a mini-drama errupted at one of the counts.

    North Hertfordshire District Council
No change in North Hertfordshire where the Conservatives were able to keep hold of their slim majority.

    South Bedfordshire District Council

    EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

Eastern Region - inc Beds and Herts
There was disappointment for the former BBC journalist Martin Bell who failed in his bid to become an Independent MEP for the Eastern Region, which includes Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Instead the UKIP snatched 2 of the 7 seats, the Conservatives 3, leaving Labour and the Lib Dems with one each.

South Eastern Region - inc Bucks
The UK Independence Party gained an extra seat, whilst the Conservatives and Labour lost one each. Nigel Farage, the re-elected UKIP MEP, says the vote represents a landmark achievement for the party.
