The council has a total of 50 seats, and a third of these, 17 seats in total, were up for election on Thursday.

With two of the Tory seats going uncontested, it was always going to be hard for any other party to get a majority. But with a higher than expected turnout the Conservatives seized two seats from Labour and one from the Lib Dems.

It brings the current tally to Lib Dem 12, Con 34, Lab 4.
