| ESSENTIAL
INFO |
 |
|
The
origins of Carnival can be traced right back to pre-Roman
times, when it was all decidedly Pagan.
In
time, Christianity took over and influenced the celebrations.
Throughout
history, Carnival has been subtly changing and modifying as
it was integrated into different cultures and taken to different
countries.
|
 |
 |
|
 |
Around
150,00 people are thought to have attended the 29th Luton International
Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday with up to 1800 people actually
taking part on more than 60 floats.
 |
| Carnival
can be a serious business! |
Once
again the centre of Luton came to a standstill for the biggest one
day celebration in Europe, although those in the procession were
anything but still as they danced the full length of the route.
The
streets were awash with colour and music - including a giant float
from BBC Three Counties Radio, on which Luton Youth Music played
in a samba band, while pupils from Icknield High danced their hearts
out.
Many
different groups, clubs, schools, societies and communities were
involved, bringing a diverse mix of arts, music and culture to the
streets of the town.
 |
| Dancing
the route! |
From
masquerade groups and sound trucks to steel bands and stilt walkers
- there was something in the parade to entertain everyone.
The
procession followed a slightly altered route this year and at one
point, it came to a halt, after one of the articulated lorries taking
part became wedged under a bridge - but it was soon released!
The
weather was glorious and held out all afternoon so that revellers
could thoroughly enjoy the extravaganza.

| Well
what a great day - the children were great, the atmosphere was
great and the BBC Three Counties Float was by far the loudest
of them all - (you could hear the music from the float in the
outskirts of Dunstable!) and was definitely the most energetic.
Everyone had a really fun day out and congratulations everybody
at 3CR for winning Best Float 2004! Well deserved! |

| A
great procession - thanks to all who prepared it, took part,
marshalled and to those who cleared up afterwards. There were
some terrific costumes and music. BUT - my family and I stood
opposite the Town Hall and it was frustrating to see the artistes
performing on the platform barely visible to us and have to
wait far too long for them to continue in the procession. We,
and others in the crowd, thought that this rather broke up the
momentum of the procession and felt it unnecessary. |
