    ESSENTIAL INFO

The origins of Carnival can be traced right back to pre-Roman times, when it was all decidedly Pagan.

In time, Christianity took over and influenced the celebrations.

Throughout history, Carnival has been subtly changing and modifying as it was integrated into different cultures and taken to different countries.

Four square miles of the town were packed with crowds watching 45 floats and an estimated 2,000 people in the procession dancing their hearts out.

The streets were awash with colour and music - including a giant float from BBC Three Counties Radio and a mainframe costume that was 14.5ft tall.

Pupils from Bushmead Primary School in Luton had made their marvellous costumes at a special mass camp - with fake steel drums to carry.

    Multi-coloured costumes.
    Colours were vibrant

The carnival took advantage of the newly opened Villa Link, with a brand new route which took the procession up on to a stage in St George's Square.

As well as the combination of music from the procession, the University of Luton stage and the St George's Square stage were host to everything from musical to soca and calypso.
