The
seven-month long event will highlight how many travellers and gypsies
there are in Hertfordshire. It will be an informative and thought-provoking
exhibition about Traveller culture and identity, right up to the
present day.
 |
| Mother
and child |
The
Passing Places project started in the summer of 2002, when Hertford
Museum approached the Hertfordshire Traveller Education Project
(part of Minority Ethnic Curriculum Support Services) in Hertford
to ask them if the museum could help. Chris Tyler, Head of the Traveller
Education Project in Hertfordshire suggested that the museum hold
an exhibition about Travellers which will involve local Travellers
and inform non-Travellers on different Traveller lifestyles.
 |
| Travellers
and cart |
The
exhibition looks at different Traveller communities and their ways
of life that have existed for many centuries in the UK.
Visitors
can explore and learn about their different beliefs, values, feelings
and history through the stories on the panels, photographs, paintings
and also through the voices of local Travellers who were interviewed.
These
voices really come to life as visitors listen to Travellers talking
about topics such as growing up, work, living space and families
on special listening posts within the exhibition.

| Travelling

The
project has been made possible through funding as one of seven Hertfordshire
museums participating in Diverse Hertfordshire, Diverse Museums
Cultural Diversity Project, organised by Hertfordshire Museums.
In
total, the Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting these projects with
just over £160,000, which will include the appointment of
a Cultural Diversity Officer who will be working closely with all
the museums involved.
There
will be many different events held at different times throughout
the seven months.
