The website, entitled island-of-art.com, was thought up by St Albans businessman Andre Bottin.

The recent launch took place at Childwickbury Manor, the home shared by Christiane Kubrick and her late husband, the film director Stanley Kubrick.

Mr Bottin is a web designer and wanted to start the website to give a platform for local artists and to bring them to the attention of private and corporate buyers.

The idea is to help artists exhibit and sell their works of art on line.

    Online shop

Andre, a Frenchman who has lived in St Albans for more than 17 years, explained: "Island of Art takes care of all those activities that individual artists find so difficult, if not impossible, to do for themselves.

"For example, promoting their work online, setting up and running an online shop, if necessary managing the packaging and dispatch of their works of art and, of course, dealing with all aspects of administration."

The website has been launched under the auspices of the Fine Art Trade Guild, the trade association for the art and framing industry.
