Tony Matthews has been painting cars all his life, after completing an apprenticeship in Hitchin, Herts, as a technical artist many years ago.

Precision is central to his work, in which he depicts the car in full, with all its engine workings, nuts and bolts.

The first exhibition of his work - a retrospective - is one of three coming up at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage, Herts, over the coming months.

The collection includes plenty of variety, with an eclectic collection of subject matter, style and technique.

    Car painted by Tony Matthews

At the end of the month painter and printmaker Judith Foster will display her paintings, reliefs and screen prints.

Tony Matthews' autos offer a detailed look at the make-up of cars, with the intricacies of the car's engine given his expert touch.

He paints in acrylic and has spent most his working life as a commercial artist, doing work for Ford and Lotus among others.

Fast cars are a favourite, but the exhibition which opens in the new year, features all kinds of vehicles and some boats.

Tony Matthews - 9th January - 8th February 2004. Entrance is free to all exhibitions.
