Bright Sparks!

Ian Pearce visits a very special holiday play scheme.

While parents everywhere are desperate for entertainment for their children during the summer holidays, youngsters in the village of Meppershall get off to a flying start each year thanks to a four day holiday scheme organised by the church of St Mary the Virgin.

Called "Sparks", the four days of activities transform the pleasant old church. As I arrived, some 80 children and the adult helpers stood on the ancient pews to sing. Giant figures hung from the roof and everywhere there was evidence of the creativity of the children.

The children then split into their groups and joined different activities. Some played rounders in a field loaned by the neighbouring farmer.

Rector John Harper and his wife Sandra, the course organiser, turn over the rectory to the children. The garden is home to gazebos, where some of the messier activities take place, and the kitchen is being used  to make loaves and fishes . In fact only the Rector's bedroom is off limits!

Each year there's a different theme and this year the message of Jesus was delivered through sporting connections.

Sparks is a brilliant high energy way to kick off the summer holidays and it couldn't happen without the army of adults who also give of their time.
