Introducing... Alex Holmes

She's been writing music since she was five!

Please state the names of all the band members and the instruments they play…

Alex Holmes (female piano vocalist)

How would you describe your style of music?

Nu Soul/Jazz

What would you say are your musical influences?

Ella Fitzgerald, John Mayer, Carol King, Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Eva Casady, Beth Neilsen Chapman, Billie Holiday

How did the band form?

At a young age i knew what i loved doing. At five, a friend and i were already making up tunes and very amusing lyrics. My dad and i then progressed together, with him on guitar, whilst i found my keen ear for melodies. By 9, my piano playing had progressed enough for me to compose with, and a very deep and meaningful song emerged - 'Here I Stand'. This is where i really started. From then on, it was me and my piano. After originally recording 'Here I Stand' in 2005, i knew exactly what i wanted to do in life!

Of all the songs you have written, what’s your current favourite and why?

Dreams, it makes me really think about how much I enjoy writing and performing music and appreciate it.

What’s your most memorable gig and why?

Playing at The Troubadour, Earls Court, London. Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan amoung other famous names have played there. It had a great atmosphere and was a very intimate venue to play in and although it was a little daunting, the audience were completely focussed on the stage, which infact relaxed me and made it a great experience.

What’s your fan base like?

What group of people would you say you appealed to most?
I think my music is approachable to all different ages. The jazz influence makes it rather relaxing to listen to and the soul-y aspects give it some bite.

Name one unusual fact about you?

I've learnt classical piano/violin and singing (I would never perform classical singing!)

If you could record a collaboration with ANYONE - who would it be and why?

John Mayer, his approach to music is so fresh in comparison to alot of things you get to hear today, he gives everything in his performing.

What’s your ultimate ambition or what’s your dream?

I want to be known as a unique artist, a songwriter who loves her work and sharing it with others. I want to be appreciated as a songwriting artist rather than a product with an overly auto-tuned voice.
