St Paul's Church in Bedford became the BBC's Studio 6 during the Second World War. ![]() St Paul's Church, Bedford From 1942 until 1945 the Daily Service was broadcast from the Trinity Chapel carrying a message of hope and faith to radios across the world. The chapel has just been restored and the BBC's involvement there is being marked through a specially commissioned carved inscription in the floor. When I arrived, Lida Kindersley and her team of young craftsmen were putting the finishing touches to the work under the proud and watchful eye of architect Michael Dales. Lida describes her work as stone cutting and she was painstakingly chiselling away at a yorkstone slab which now bears the inscription 'Studio 6'. Inside the Trinity Chapel words radiate out into the main church including the BBC vision "Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation" culminating in the word "Peace" in the main nave. ![]() Adding the finishing touches... It's a simple device which is a fusion between the ancient and the modern. Canon John Pedlar is delighted with the latest addition to the wealth of history in St Paul's. No doubt the new artwork will feature in the guided tours of the BBC's Bedford locations. St Paul's is full of Bedford's history and is well worth a visit. last updated: 17/06/2009 at 12:03 SEE ALSOYou are in: Beds Herts and Bucks > Faith > Faith Features > Cut in stone
