It's part of a two-year project which includes the widening of the M25 in Hertfordshire. Work has started on a two-year scheme to refurbish the Hatfield tunnel. The M25 will be widened to four lanes between Junctions 16 and 23 and between Junctions 27 and 30, and as part of that the Hatfield Tunnel on the A1(M) will be refurbished. For motorists using the road this will mean that during the day during the day there'll be narrow lanes northbound and a speed restriction of 40mph. Southbound, the hard shoulder between junctions 3 and 4 will be closed. At night the diversion via the A1001 will be running in the southbound direction between junctions 4 and 3. Then, from Friday, the Highways Agency say that, for around two months, three narrow lanes and a 40mph speed restriction in both directions will be in place. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites Our Trafficlink team here at BBC Three Counties have told us that at the end of this two month period, the tunnel itself will close northbound in July until May 2010 with a contraflow running traffic both ways through the southbound tunnel - and then, it will swap over with the southbound tunnel closed.
