We want to hear your thoughts... Plans to widen the M1 through Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire have been scrapped. Instead vehicles will be allowed to use the hard shoulder between Junctions 10 and 13. Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon said a trial on the M42, using the hard shoulder at busy times, had shown it was possible to ease congestion without concreting over more land. Preparation work was already underway by the Highways Agency for the widening of the Motorway from Junction 10 at Luton airport to Junction 13 at Bedford and south Milton Keynes. But now the government has decided that instead of widening the motorway they will introduce Hard Shoulder Running. The hard shoulder scheme trialled near Birmingham sees the lane opened to traffic at peak times, with a maximum speed limit of 60 mph. Details are being finalised and work is due to start either later this year or in 2010. last updated: 19/01/2009 at 12:29 Have Your SayWe want to hear your opinion...
