A recording studio on wheels?!Kelly Betts Question: What do you get if you cross a recording studio with a mobile vintage airstream caravan? ![]() The Rockhopper Answer: You get Rockhopper!!!I went to Buckingham, where they have their headquarters, to check it out and I think you should too! The RockhopperThe Rockhopper mobile studio will be in Buckingham until 20 August 2008! When I walked in (after getting lost) I was greeted by David and Steve, two very friendly chaps who were more then happy to show me around! Rockhopper was Steve Redfearn's brainchild and as far as we're aware it's the only one of its kind! It's been up and running for three months and one day they hope to have lots of rockhoppers scattered about the globe! It’s unique and fully equipped with the latest recording gear with a collection of guitars, basses, drums and keyboards. You can also bring your own instruments if you wish! And the best part is that anyone can use it! Even me! ![]() The Rockhopper Control Room Here's how it all happened...Steve Redfearn is a keen musician and recording enthusiast, who conceived the idea of Rockhopper two years ago, after selling his food ingredients business. He wanted to design and build a recording studio which would be the best quality possible, to differentiate it from home recording studios, and would be accessible to all, particularly young bands, singers, songwriters and 'second-time-arounders' i.e. those more seasoned musicians who were re-inventing themselves musically. So, after looking at various propositions to house his fledgling idea; for example, a room at the back of a music shop, an Ifor Williams trailer and a Ford Transit, he eventually hit upon the idea of a vintage American Airstream caravan. ![]() The Rockhopper Control Room In October 2006, he bought a 26 foot long 1963 Airstream Overlander and, with the help of an engineer, set about soundproofing and treating the caravan and then constructing recording and control rooms inside. Finally, he sourced the recording equipment, which had to be professional quality but small enough to fit inside the caravan. And so, the Rockhopper was born. Steve has amassed quite a collection of acoustic and electric guitars over the years and these, together with a fine studio drum kit and a Roland keyboard, are also part of the Rockhopper package – available, free of charge to Rockhopper’s customers. ![]() The Rockhopper Control Room For more information on the studio, pricing, local tour and anything else to do with rock hopper contact David and Steve via the website!
