Luton International Carnival 2008 - Bank Holiday Monday 26th May

Luton Carnival will be bigger and better this year. That's the view of Parade Manager Jacqui Harding after last year's event had to be called off because of the rain.

Jacqui, whose job, as you might imagine, is to organise the parade, was devastated when the bad weather put paid to all her hard work.

"I was in the park at 6.00am in the rain and it was awful" she said.

"It was a horrible, horrible day. I cried buckets. It was heartbreaking.

"I had a feeling on the Sunday it wasn't going to happen" she continued, "because the weather was so, so bad. Then, at 5.30am I got a phone call from one of the groups saying that they weren't coming and I thought I really don't blame them.

"I got up and went straight to the park and I thought there's no way it can go on, it's just not safe. I've never seen Luton so empty in all my life on that day. There was nobody anywhere. It wasn't a nice day, one I don't want to remember."

But the events of last year have made everybody involved with the carnival want to come out much stronger than before.

"I told somebody last year that because that happened [last year] we're going to come out bigger and better" said Jacqui.

"We're going to make more noise, we're going to be more colourful and we're going to bring the smiles back and bring Luton Carnival back to the way it was!"

Spectacular

The event, well known for its spectacular colours, gyrating dancing, and a blend of soca, reggae and rap rhythms is coming to town on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th May 2008.

Carnival off!

Luton on May Bank Holiday 2007

Luton International Carnival is organised by Luton Borough Council Arts Development Unit, together with partners the Luton Carnival Arts Development Trust and Luton Sounds Forum.

The town’s first carnival was in 1976 when it was just a Victorian street fair put on as part of the Borough's centenary celebrations.

It has developed over the years and in 1998 acquired international status and received the largest single lottery award for carnival development.

Luton International Carnival includes the cultures and communities of Luton whilst
continuing to develop and evolve into a glittering and colourful spectacular.
