Untrained Melodies

The October Game
The October Game

Featured artist: The October Game

Find out what happens when three guys lock themselves in a Bedfordshire bedroom for a year!

The October Game are:

Luke Williams: Vocals, Guitar etc.
Nick Kozuch: Guitar etc.
Owen Stephen: Bass, Vocals etc.

How would you describe your style of music?

In very broad terms, rock....  indie/alternative ....but that's probably not a very helpful answer. Between the three of us there is hardly a single piece of music that we don't like and, as such, we are influenced by a huge range of artists, bands and genres. That, and the advantage of being locked in a bedroom in Bedfordshire, where there isn't the oppressive "scenes" of bigger cities such as London or Manchester (where bands tend to all have a reasonably similar sound) meant we could be creative and create something quite unique.... well, that's what we try to do anyway.

What would you say are your musical influences?

People have described us as sounding influenced by bands such as Radiohead, Massive Attack, The Cure and Elbow..... Indie Rock with elements of Folk, Classical music and Elelctronica.... in a nutshell.

How did the band form?

We were in a band called Insomnia until early 2005 when, for various reasons, our drummer left and we called it a day. Then the three remaining members (Nick, Luke and Owen) pretty much didn't leave our bedrooms for a year and wrote and recorded an album, "Box Of A Billion Lights". This was released towards the end of summer 2006. Since then we have been gigging pretty extensively accross the country to promote it.

Of all the songs you have written, what’s your current favourite and why?

That's not an easy question to answer.

Luke: It varies, depending on the time and what mood I'm in, at the moment it's pretty cold so I like Deepest Suburban Sleep, it's seems quite wintery to me.

Owen: I don't know, I remember writing Slowburn and feeling more proud about that one than I had about many others before. Bell, Why So Blue? is really good fun to play.

Nick: I usually like the really new ones that aren't quite finished, it's exciting to think that I'm working on one of the newest songs in the world.

What type of gig do you most like to play and why?

That's a hard one too. I think the best reception we've ever had was at the Kambar in Cambridge, that was cool. We generally really like playing in student venues. Leicester student union was another good one for various reasons, not least of which was that we ended up playing to Chris from Kasabian and selling him an album. It's also nice to play with other really good bands and three which I really liked playing with in 2006 were Fell City Girl, Redjetson and The Carter Manoeuvre.

What’s your most memorable gig and why?

Hmmm.... Well, there's a cool venue in Grays, Essex, where after we had finished playing, the whole place turned into an odd school disco type event, and people started getting naked.... I'll be hard pushed to forget that.... Good fun though!

What’s your fan base like? What group of people would you say you appealed to most?

Generally, it's a pretty wide mix, we'd like to think that people who are heavily into music, and are always buying albums etc. should be able to find something they like in it.

What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done / sent to you?

Owen - We once played a festival in Colchester and afterwards a small ten-year-old boy gave me an Andy Cole figure.

Name one unusual fact about each of you.

Nick: I have no sense of smell.

Luke: I can move things just by looking at them.

Owen: Every month I try to spend a day eating three times my own bodyweight in cheese.

If you could record a collaboration with ANYONE - who would it be and why?

Luke: David Attenborough - what a voice!

Nick: I'm always up for having people record and play with us - so anyone who's up for it can just get in touch.

What’s the band’s ultimate ambition or what’s your dream?

We only aim to never have to stop!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?!

Box of a billion lights is out now through carmandie records (www.carmandierecords.com).

Good bye.
