    St Albans Gang Show 2006

St Albans Gang Show Dress Rehearsal
Looking good at the Dress Rehearsal!

Meet the Gang - Part 4

It's time to sing your heart out and give your all - it's the 2006 St Albans Gang Show Dress Rehearsal! Cast member Flis, 17, gives us the fourth installment of her online Gang Show diary here.

    Gang Show Facts

    • The St Albans Scout & Guide Gang Show is renowned to be one of the best in the country.
    • People will be travelling from across the UK to see it.
    • OFFICIAL! – IT’S A SELL OUT!
    • The show will play to packed audiences from Wednesday 8 February – Saturday 11 February.
    • There are over 120 cast members (from 11 to 25 years of age)
    • Over 40 songs – that’s more than three west end musicals!
    • Over 30 dance routines
    • Over 18,000 items in the Gang Show wardrobe
    • Over 130 volunteers help to put the show on – production crew, musicians, technical crew, wardrobe team, set builders, business team to name but a few

With only a few hours left until the curtain goes up on Gang Show 2006, I am re-capping on my words and checking I know all the dance routines so that I wont look too silly on stage!

This is where our hard work finally becomes something.  The Arena will be buzzing with friends, family, gang show groupies(!), local scouts and guides and they will all be here to watch us; The St Albans Gang Show!

I can't wait until the band begins to play the overture, and you can hear the audience on the other side of the curtain.  When you know this is it.  When all that we've been working for since October comes together.  In the last few weeks, it has seemed as though Gang Show has taken over; you spend your weekends and your evenings rehearsing, and once this week is finished, we will all have to find something else to fill up our time!

    Flis enjoys the dress rehearsal!

The full dress rehearsal went well yesterday, and once the boys had got used to wearing the lipstick and eye shadow, some almost seemed to enjoy it!

Although the audience for the dress rehearsal was small, we were performing it to some people who had never seen it before, and that was quite exciting.  We have sussed out which costume changes are quick and when we have a few moments to grab a drink without missing our next item!  Everyone has their favourite costume and their favourite item and in between items, cast members often come down the stairs humming gang show numbers to themselves!

Although there were the inevitable technical problems you have to grin and bear at a dress rehearsal, it seemed to go fairly smoothly and we're set for a good week.
Over the last few weeks I have given you an insight into my thoughts on Gang Show, so I thought for a change I would ask some fellow cast members what they thought of being in the gang and the opening night.

"The feeling in my stomach just before the curtain goes up isn't just butterflies - it's every single butterfly in existence! "
    Micheal, Gang Show performer

Sophie has been in the cast for four years and said "Not only is gang show a time where you can put your whole heart into something but it is when you can really work as a team member to produce a fab result. Having close friends and in many cases family with you too, adds to making the whole thing fun and worthwhile."

Nat has been involved in the show on and off since 1999 and said "For me there's nothing better than the feeling you get when the curtain goes up and you're surrounded by the friends you've made over the last four months - it's a buzz you'll never forget."

    The final dress rehearsal!
    The final dress rehearsal!

Micheal, who wrote the web diary last year, said this about the opening night "The feeling in my stomach just before the curtain goes up isn't just butterflies; it's every single butterfly in existence! After the curtain is up though, the feeling turns into euphoria and it's just the greatest experience on God's earth!"

So you see, it's not just me who's Gang Show mad!  Everyone involved is excited about this evening, and there is no doubt in anyones mind that this week great friendships will be forged and everyone will leave with many memories that will stay with them for years to come.

As the line in the song goes "We have made these memories and if you're very smart, you'll take each little memory and lock it in the pocket of your heart"
