Big George
Big George

Big George

BBC Three Counties Radio's very own music maestro delves into the world of music every Sunday evening.

Starsign:

Gemini

Born 'n' bred:

Born in a flat opposite Clapham Common, but I’ve spent most of my life in my hometown of Stony Stratford

Last job:

I’ve never actually had a proper job

Football team:

I’m a diehard MK Dons fan

I wouldn't be working here if it wasn't for:

Mark Norman. If it wasn’t for him I would have never won a Sony Gold. From his kicks up the backside about levels to his encouragement to push the boundaries of music appreciation he has made an incalculably positive impact on my career

Most interesting fact about you:

At the time, I was the youngest person in the country to have a Vasectomy on the NHS, I was 24.

Most annoying trait:

chat chat chat chat chat

Claim to fame (other than being on Three Counties Radio):

I composed the theme tune for 'Have I Got News For You', and done the music for 'The Office'.

Most embarrassing moment (not on air):

About to go on stage in front of 25,000 people in Holland, only to find my guitar case was empty (the guitar was safely in the rehearsal room in Essex, where I’d left it).

Most embarrassing on air incident:

Every weekday morning from 6:30am to 10am - take your pick!

Weirdest place you spent the night:

In the back of a transit van under a shabby old carpet in a motorway service station car park (about a million nights)

First record bought:

The Wind Crys Mary by Jimi Hendrix (still my favourite single), although I do remember queuing up with my brother to get a copy of The Beatles, Strawberry Fields on the day of release, along with a million other fans. The shop was waiting for it to arrive, so we waited outside from 7:30am until lunchtime, when the van arrived

My first car:

A beautiful old (banger) Humber - leather seats, wooden upholstery and a thirst for petrol so great, I had to call the next petrol station down the road to tell them I was on my way!

My favourite place in Beds, Herts and Bucks:

Stony Stratford High St, a step back in time, when shopping wasn’t dominated by Supermarkets

Desert island luxury:

Mrs Webley

My hero:

The man who’s had the most influence on my life: Herbie Flowers

Would hate to be in the Big Brother house with:

Anyone. I detest reality TV programmes

Favourite item in my wardrobe:

Loon Pants, Platform Shoes and Tank Top, I was cool in the 1970’s

If I wasn't at BBC Three Counties Radio I'd be:

Down the allotment watering the Roquette and Spinage.

My dream co-presenter would be:

A monk who’s taken silent orders

Realised I was getting old when:

I became a Grandad, and I love it. As it happens, when you become a Grandad you suddenly know the answer to everything in the whole wide world!

Useful tips:

If it ain’t broke, break it!
Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win
Be Bold And Mighty Forces Will Come To Your Aid
Think Globally, Act Locally
blah blah blah
That’s All Folks!
