The children, aged from 3 to 13, each paid £1 to take part in the competition and create a picture on the theme of 'Parks and Gardens'.

They had plenty of inspiration from the surroundings – the grounds of the 12th Century church of St Leonard’s in the village of Flamstead. The children were each issued with chalk and a blank sheet on a cardboard backing to simulate a pavement slab. Taking part in the national competition was the idea of the Flamstead Youth Parish Council. The money raised is being divided between the Council and to help children with Muscular Dystrophy. The youngsters on the Parish Council want to use their part of the money to put on a basketball day for local children.

Flamstead Parish Councillor Karon Shipton who helped co-ordinate the day said, "We’re very pleased with the turn-out. This event was driven by the Youth Parish Council. They’ve printed up all the sheets, put adverts up around the village and encouraged their friends to take part. It’s great for them - doing something they’re responsible for.” Local artist Peter Wagon was on hand to judge the competition which was divided into three age groups. The winners were:
Age 6-8 category: Adam Bryne from Flamstead
Age 9-11 category: Ruth Beeley from Luton
Age 12-15 category: Kojo Acquaah-Harrison from Dunstable These winners will now go through to the national final. The judges then choose the overall Young Pavement Artist of the Year.
