Bedford Blues 14-13 Plymouth Albion: Powergen Shield Final

    Neil Roy reports.
Bedford beat Plymouth to win the Powergen Challenge Shield Final at Twickenham on Saturday. A late penalty sealed the victory, after the Blues had been behind for most of the contest.

    Powergen Shield Final

    Bedford v Plymouth

    Twickenham

    16 April 2005

    Kick off: 12.00 midday

A Leigh Hinton penalty four minutes from the end of time got Bedford the one point win that coach Rudi Straueli assured everyone that it was all that he wanted.

The Blues were on top for most of the second half but found it difficult to score until full back Mark Harris squeezed over for a try.

Hinton missed the conversion that would have levelled the scores but he kept his nerve when it came to the crunch and the Bedford defence held firm under pressure at the end.

It was 13-6 to Plymouth at half time. For Plymouth - a try after an interception inside two minutes, a conversion and two penalties to Bedford's two penalties by Hinton.

So now the town of Bedford completes a hand of all the finals at each level.

They won the Cup in 1975, the Bedford Queens won the Junior Vase equivalent in 1995, Bedford Athletic won the Intermediate in 1998 and now the Bedford Blues have won the Challenge Shield.
