Overcome your phobias!

Phobias

Do you have an irrational fear of something that doesn't worry most people - spiders, crowds, flying? Normally sane Jan Hetherington comes clean and talks about her phobia...

We will all have panicked with good reason at some time.  Most people when either peering over the edge of a cliff, about to undergo to root canal work or confronted by a growling dog will feel afraid.  To panic in this situation is normal. It is a protective mechanism, which makes us more alert in a situation and prepares us in dealing with any danger.

However, what if a perfectly harmless experience creates the same response?

Phobias - what are they?

A phobia is an intense fear of a situation or object that wouldn't normally worry other people. It could severely restrict your life and may even force you to take extreme measures to avoid whatever triggers it. Almost all phobias feature places, situations, animals or objects which in themselves aren’t necessarily threatening at all, but which people react to - often out of all proportion.  Those of us, who suffer from phobias, when confronted by the object of our fears, are very likely to panic - which in turn produces sometimes severe physical symptoms.

• Fast pounding heartbeat
• Breathing difficulties
• Chest pains
• Sweating
• Nausea
• Trembling
• Dizziness
• Dry Mouth
• Disorientation

Although these feeling pass, afterwards, you may feel depressed or embarrassed by them - all contributing towards making you feel even more nervous and inclined to avoid the situation ever again!

Common Phobias

It is possible to be phobic about almost anything and to suffer from more than one phobia at a time.  Agoraphobia (fear of public places or open spaces), claustrophobia (fear of confined places), arachnophobia (fear of spiders), fear of heights, the dentists, flying and social phobias (meeting people) are amongst the most common types.

What causes phobias?

The exact cause isn't known. Theories include frightening experiences in early childhood or learned behaviour from a family member who suffers the same phobia.  This is certainly true in my case.  I have a phobia of frogs.  I can trace this back to possibly my earliest childhood recollection, when as a very small child playing in the back garden, I was suddenly made aware of my mother running down the garden path screaming at me to get indoors quick!  While burning some garden rubbish on a bonfire, she had spotted the trigger to her own phobia - a frog - and all rational behaviour had been lost. Now safe in doors, what she had neglected to notice was that the bonfire was still burning, had spread to the garden shed and was perilously close to burning our house down. Had it not been for an eagle eyed neighbour - I might not be here writing this today!

So, somewhere in my irrational mindset, frogs mean near death experiences.  Not only are they responsible for almost burning your house down, but they're also disgustingly slimy and have the extraordinary ability to disguise themselves in the garden, just lying in wait for me to walk up the path in my wellies and to jump straight into the top of them!

Please don't ask me how many times I've found it impossible to open our back door and venture out into the garden, and all because I've spotted what could be a frog half way down the garden path - is that really a frog or just a leaf disguised as a frog?  Why are my palms sweating, why is my heart racing and why do I suddenly feel sick?

Pathetic isn't it? But I'll have you know I'm in very good company…

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan is claustrophobic, so was less than thrilled about appearing in the underwater scenes in GoldenEye, his first Bond outing.

Arsenal footballer Dennis Bergkamp developed a fear of flying after a false bomb scare on a plane during the 1994 World Cup. He has an agreement with the club that states he need never fly as part of his job, even if it means missing out on away matches.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is arachnophobic, plasmophobic and most strangely coulrophobic. That means he's afraid of spiders, ghosts and clowns!

Madonna is reported to have brontophobia - in other words, a fear of thunder and lightning, which must be tricky, seeing as she spends most of her time here in Britain...

Natalie Appleton

And poor Natalie Appleton - who can forget her multiple phobias in 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here…' which included cars, planes, lifts, crowds, hygiene and food. At one point, she even freaked out when she touched a tree!

Getting Help...

This is where I have to admit that I've not sought any help at all - my phobia doesn't impact too much on my life and over time I've developed various coping strategies to deal with it (getting rid of the fish pond in the garden has helped enormously!).

However, there is help out there. Self help groups can be a good way of contacting other people with similar problems. Relaxation techniques can also alleviate the panic that confronting your phobia can cause.

If you're feeling particularly brave, 'graduated exposure' or 'desensitisation' may be for you!  Over a period of time, a person with arachnophobia might initially be asked to look at a photograph of a spider, then look at a spider in a glass tank, going on to look at a spider that someone else is holding, eventually building up to possibly even touching one themselves! This may take many months to achieve.  At each stage, the person is encouraged to talk about how they feel and use specific techniques to control their anxiety.

Not altogether sure that I'm ready to be 'gradually exposed' to a box of frogs… just don't expect to see me in the Reptile House of the local Safari Park either!

Have Your Say

I'm sure I'm not the only person out there with a totally irrational fear of something that can do me no harm at all…

I really didn't understand my daughter's discomfort with moving things until I read the comments on this blog...we researched the name of her fears: Ancraophobia - Fear of wind Anemophobia - Fear of air drafts or wind. Kinesophobia - Fear of movement or motion.Kinetophobia - Fear of movement or motion.

George
I have something that I dont think is a fear, but a phobia because for some reason i hate people rubbing their hands together, and touching rough things, it makes me shudder and feel sick

mumofboys
i have a fear of swinging objects or clock ticking, things that creak,i know it sounds very wierd but it affects me everyday,i cant stand it i start to sweat n go all funny,i dont know where to turn

Sarah
I have had anxiety of swinging things since I was young. I am now 24 years old and it seems like it is getting worse! Examples of what give me this anxiety are: vertical blinds, ceiling fan strings, curtains moving in the breeze, ornaments on a christmas tree if someone walks past the tree, stockings cannot be hung on the mantle and sometimes even my car keys swaying while I am driving gets me anxious... just to name a few! Everyone I know cannot believe this causes my heart rate to go up, I want to look away or not even be near these things. Has anyone found a treatment for this?? I am getting desperate. I am apprehensive to even have children, because the thought of a baby swing and a mobile get me anxious just thinking about it! Someone please help me if you know a treatment!!! ☺

i too also i have a fear of swinging things but it's very specific. i get nervous with hanging lights, such as ones in restaurants. and ceiling fan pulls. however, i'm also afraid of basket balls dribbling. the motion and the sound freaks me out. and i'm scared of water in certain situations. i can go in a pool fine, but if you make a bath and the water is sloshing around i'll have a panic attack. i was put on an anti anxiety med called ativan to take only when i'll be in a situation i know i'll freak out. i've only taken it once so far and it worked. i still feel kinda nervous all the time though, either afraid i'm gonna have another one, or anytime i feel like tehre's something wrong with me now i freak out and i think i actually make myself have symtomps. i think i'm getting a fear of having something seriously wrong with me or alife threathing illness.

KD
I'm afraid of things submerged underwater that shouldn't be there. Bottle caps, string, chains, cars...anything really. I'm not afraid of boats, as long as they're still afloat. Sunken ships? God, they scare me.

jesse
scared of wind chimes cant see them or hear them.

nicola
i have a very extreme phobia of frogs and toads and the best thing is... I HAVE NO IDEA WHY?! i've had no bad experiences but if i see one either in real life, picture or video i completely flip! i scream my head off, tremble and find it exteremly difficult to breathe... everyone i know thinks i'm stupid and they all laugh at me...so happy to see that i'm not alone after all!

DebC
Hi again, can anyone tell me what the fear of swinging is called? I've had my baby since my last message and i have cut all the strings off his toys. Can anyone help please...

Claire
Oh my god, how many of us are so scared of frogs. I hate them, can't bear to look at a picture of them or see them on TV. They make me feel so anxious, frightened and sick I wish the world could get rid of them, they ruin my life. Especially in this warm wet weather, I just know they are out there waiting to pounce. Yes, and why does everyone laugh at this phobia, it is so not funny. Everyone thinks I am mad as they can't hurt you!! Even to mention the word frog hurts me! Has anyone had any help to overcome this fear. It affects where I go and what footwear I need to wear, definately not sandals when the ground is damp. I HATE THEM, let me know if you can help please

Jen
I also have a fear of frogs and toads. I have no recollection of how this phobia developed but I have a nervous breakdown whenever I come across one. The last time I accidentally touched one I thought my finger was going to fall off and I scrubbed it with soap and water feeling as though I had touched the most contaminated thing possible. No one can explain their phobia...that is why it is a phobia. I don't need some one explaining to me that frogs and toads have no teeth. That isn't going to change my fear.

Nikki
My phobia of frogs and toads I think was triggered by one jumping around my friends garden when I 5 or 6. Everyone screamed and ran to the house, but I was last and her brother had picked it up and was headed towards me, cue meltdown!! My husband had to drive home one night after one to many as on leaving our friends house, he thought it funny to pick one up and hold it up to the car window - I was in such a mess, I couldn't drive. I want to take my children to Florida, but an ex went there and I remember him telling me the swimming pool was filled with the hideous little beggars, so that'll be a problem. I was late for work once as when I opened my front door to leave, there was a massive toad on my path. I slammed the door and was sweating and my heart was racing, I was crying...I left it half an hour, couldn't see it and had to run like a blind idiot to my car! glad I'm not alone but I reckon I'm stuck with it as there is no way I'm touching one!

Chloe Shaw
I'm 15 and i too have a phobia of frogs, i have had bad experiences with them and i think for me its just the way they jump. When i was about 4 or 5, i remember walking into the kitchen and seeing a frog come in through the back door ame jumping down the hallway, i was terrified as i watched it jump around randomly. My mother had to chase it out with a mop. So far i've had two other experiences this year, my mother saw one night and said watch out and i screamed and one night when i hyperventilated. x

Kirst
i too have a huge fear of swinging objects, signs in shops, swings etc, there is a swing on the green outside my grandparents house, its been there for over 20 years, its hung from very high up and keeps twisting, so it swings all over the place in the wind, and it is always windy there, a couple of years ago it got so bad i had to go out there and tie a piece of rope to it and i found a hook and stuck it in the ground with the rope tied to it, so it didnt move at all. i live about 3 hours away from my grandparents and i even freak out when i am at home thinking about it, if its windy i just cant get it out of my head!i wish the tree its hung from would fall down!! i didnt used to like balloons, flashing lights and things that float, and dripping taps, they arent so bad now, its just the swing phobia!! I had a panic attack about an hour ago thinking about it!! a tyre swing is worse because it swings and spins!! Nightmare!!

Phillipine
All along i always thought i was weird. I fear frogs with all my life, just seeing them breathe, crawl oh god even their eyes i just freak out

Mary
I am sitting here pretty much in tears. I have a HUGE fear of swinging things. I have had it for as long as i could remember. I hate swings that move in the wind . Pretty much anything along with wind chims & stuff. I'm almost 28 & it's not so bad if i don't see it BUT the people that live across the street from me just put up a tire swing in their front lawn. OMG It's been up since friday & it's driving me crazy. My family knows i "had" the fear but i guess they feel like it's done because i'm older but it's freaking me out. I can't stop thinking about it . It's making me nuts & i feel so stupid.

Jim
I too have the fear of swinging objects. Purses, swing sets, mini blinds, the cords on ceiling fans, windchimes, all of the things others have posted here. Just thinking about these things to type this list is making me feel anxious. Several folks have also mentioned music or other sounds that trigger this as well. I too have experienced this in my life. There have been times when I have been able to control this fear but it always returns. Sometimes it's worse than others. I have never met or heard of anyone else having this same fear and all my friends and family think it's crazy and irrational. Has anyone found a name for this? Has anyone found a successful treatment for this?

Elena
Fear of swinging objects...what the heck is the phobia name for it? I really want to know, because I've always been terrified of swinging objects.

Briana
Well im thankful to see im not going crazy and that im not the only one with this phobia. Im terrified of swinging objects and if i see one I freak out. I was over a friends house and they had to take something down because it was moving. I have the fear that it will never stop moving and i can handle if people dangle something because there holding onto the string and it will stop but if its something that is attached to the cieling and moves i panic. Im also afraid of spinning things like a whirlpool of water because i always think thats never going to stop spinning. when my grandmother use to have a pool my family would make whirlpools in the pool and it would just set me off that i would have to go sit somewhere far away from it.

Cath
Thank you all, im so glad I'm not the only one. My family thinks it's so funny but it's really not, my fear of frogs and toads has come to the point I dread getting out of my car after dark as the little gits are roaming around my front and back garden, every leaf is a potential toad. I hate the way they move! It makes my skin crawl!! My only hobby is gardening, I have a huge garden which unfortunately I have spent a lot of money laying decking, which i didnt realise at the time is a great place for toads to live, love and breed. My garden is fully enclosed with concrete panels and 8' fence panels so once they're in they can't get out. Not sure who is the prisoner, me or them. Plus my weirdo neighbour takes such great pleasure in throwing the toads out of his garden into mine as he know I have a phobia of them and he makes my skin crawl too! I'm 37, live alone so have no-one to dispose of them when I find one and believe me the garden is over-run with them. I miss going into my garden so much, i'm crying now as i'm typing this note. If anyone has managed to even reduce their fear I would love to hear your news

Alyson
I am 14 and I am afraid of rubber bands. Im not sure why but andytime I see another kid streching one I start freaking out. So now my friends all take rubber bands and stretch them near my face and Ill jump and occasionaly fall out of my seat. Im also afraid of slimy stuff, I mean Im not nearly as terrified of it as rubber bands but ugh like when I do dishes I just feel like Im going to be sick.

Diane
I now live in Florida. I love it so much, except that every once in a while, my cats bring in a little lizard to play and last week a frog was in my tub because my cat found it in our screened patio and brought that in....I am scared that if I am alone when I find these critters in my home, I will freak out and not know what to do. My husband is not afraid and so far the critters have come in with my cats when he's home...I fear that one day I will not have him around. I want to learn not to be afraid...How can I overcome this so I can truly enjoy having my glass doors opened from the pool/patio? Your suggestion or comment is appreciated...

Hallie
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one terrified of swinging objects. I'm 11 years old and have a terrible phobia of swinging objects. I have a swingset in my backyard and rarely go on it anymore. Whenever I see something swinging, I have a panic attack. I can't even listen to the sounds of wind chimes without knowing that they are swinging. I also have a terrible fear of heights, even if I look at someone on TV on, say, a cliff, I get dizzy. I've had both phobias ever since I was a toddler and would appreciate a name for the swinging objects one.

Nikki Nelson
I am 39 yrs old with two children. A trip into the garden is always tense and I,m constantly looking on the grass etc for frogs and toads. I simply cannot recall any fear from my childhood but I have a phobia. Even to see them on tv makes me sick. I moved to a property two yrs ago and inherited a pond, I don,t think I ever really used the garden and would cry in March when i could see the frogs mating from my kitchen window. I have sinced moved again. To say it rules my life is true and I have probably passed my fear onto my 7 yr old daughter. I now believe i will never be cured.

I Have A Realy Bad Phobia Of Walking Trough Long Grass., Even Just Looking At It Makes Me Feel Sick :S :S :S

Amy Louise
I had no idea so many people had similar phobias of frogs and toads! im 17 and iv had it as long as i can remember, i cant remember a specific incident which triggered the fear, but i remember when i was younger 2 instances, one was riding my bike around the local resevoir and the pathways were just filled with baby black frogs everywhere, i was tryin desperately not to run them over but when i put my leg down i was scared of them jumping on me, i also remember cleaning my grandmothers back garden and her having to get rid of some absolutely enormous toads in a bucket. ever since i completely break down if i see one, i cant walk past them i cant move apart from backing a few steps away, if im in an open space im terrified theres more and on many instances iv had to be picked up by a friend.last year we went to an aquarium, and in an enclosed tunnel, every tank was filled with frogs and toads, and as i tried to turn to go back, i was trapped by a woman with a pram, i had a complete break down, cried, couldnt breath, screamed, freaked out, got outside and passed out cold. how embarassing.

liz
recently i have been looking into my phobia of swinging objects. i can't stand to see anything attached to a string and swaying. it drives me nuts! i made my grandma take down the birdhouse hangin on the wall of her living room. at home we have a birdhouse, hangin from a chain outside of our kitchen window and i have begged and begged my mom to take it down but she wont. she doesnt understand. neither does my brother b/c he loves to dangle objects in front of me. what is weird is that the object has to be considerably large compared to the string it is swingin from. and i hate to think about the swingin object hitting somethin else. i lose sleep just thinkin about the bird feeder outside of the kitchen window hittin the side of the house. im glad that im not the only one who has this phobia. i would really like to know what it is called....

Bex
Prawns. Horrible horrible things!! Dead or alive, cooked or uncooked, I HATE THEM!

Bec
I am so scared off Frogs its not funny.Last night my cat was at our glass door crying coz off something out side so me and my sister went and had a look what was outside all we saw was just the cat next door then i went to move our spot light and mum yells out it was the frog on the steps so i screamed and rushed to open the door but she was to busy holding the door so i was screaming let me in let me in and the neighbours came out to have a look and i was screamed i hate frogs they are so gross all everyone in my house could do was is laugh at me. Then i went to go for a smoke and i wouldnt walk outside coz off the frog so my poor sister had to put it down stairs and you would think i finished my smoke in like 2mins that is how fast i was trying to smoke it. We worked out that i am scared of Frogs,Birds, big cockroaches(i cant even look at photos of them)Lizards,Snakes,Spiders(if they are near me) and big dogs(what i dont know), Clowns and worms. Its not really that bad i can still go out i just work around all these things if i see them i scream. But with dogs i just walk the other way lol.

i'm glad to see i'm not the only one so scared of frogs. i am so sick of people laughing about it and saying how cute they are. the worst thing is its probably going to cost me my job as they want me to do nights and i just dont go out after dark unless i have someone with me to check the path to my front door. is there any solution as its ruining my life. i know there is still one in my car. they lie in wait for me. i wish they would all die

gail
i am terrified of frogs. i just went to go somewhere and saw one in the door hinge of my car. i live 30klms from town and had to cancel all my appointments for today until i can find someone to get rid of it. i don't know how i'm going to drive again as i'm sure there will be more in there. at least thats what i'll be thinking. help

Shelley
I have a terrible fear or strong gusts of wind/windy weather, which i think leads into my other phobias of balloons & swing sets. The worst would be i have this irrational logic that if some one plays music too loud the breeze will pick up & i freak out & have to go indoors

Orla
I run screaming my head off if someone hands me a cold cooked potato. I don't mind when they are raw, I love eating hot potatoes but once they go cold I can't stand it, I feel like throwing up thinking about it.But hot potatoes are lovely.I also know someone who has a phobia of sticky things.

Jami
Evelyn and all others that have children or are afraid of things that swing/rock. My two year old(almost three year old) daughter has this fear too. It seems that it is starting to occur with more and more items. Swings, the rocker in her room, things that blow in the wind and hang, anything that hangs and swings basically. I feel horrible. She is terrified and wants me to make it stop or take it down immediately. I am talking to her pediatrician and considering play therapy to help her work through this phobia. She is terrified and it is impacting her almost daily. She is starting to accomidate to some items by avoiding them or fixing them, but I may not be with her to accomidate everything every day for her. Any ideas? Tips? Please help me help her. Thank you!

Lee
I am a 32 year old frog and toad a phobe. Ever since i was about 4 and chased by my grandad i have been petrified and been in many awful situations where friends have had to piggy back me home and new girlfriends have witnessed me freaking out exactly as everyone else has described. For some reason i am happy to look at a picture but video footage makes me squirm and feel edgy. However, seeing one in the flesh will make me run a mile, heart racing, tears and all the rest of it. Tonight, i had one of the worst experiences ever as one of our cats brought in a little Sh&tb@g while i was lying down watching big brother. It was jumping around all over the place and i properly freaked...it was my worst nightmare (apart from being chucked in a pool of them) and now i feel unsafe and under attack in my own home. The reason i like living in the city is because the chances of seeing one are much slimmer. Until i can conquer this fear, i can't bear the thought of letting the cats out. Although my girlfriend is very understanding of the whole thing, she won't allow me to keep the cats locked in all day. Like most others on this site have said, it seems to be getting worse as i get older. I have just been scouting the net to find a way of sorting this problem out once and for all and although i am not yet fully convinced it is possible, i am determined to try. If i manage to help myself in any way i will be sure to offer my advice to you all. At the moment, i love anybody else who hates frogs as much as i do and think a world without them would be ideal...i really hope i can one day feel differently.Big hug to you allLeeroy

Janet
I am also afraid of things that swing or rock. I've felt this way since i can remember age 3. Sometimes music flashing lights and the feeling of diziness will trigger me as well. I have never heard of anyone else with this fear, mind you I feel so ashamed I don't confide this to anyone. This sometimes feels like a prison I wonder if hypnosis will help me?

Joan C
I am terrified of frogs also, after 3 years in our new house one appeared the other night while I was watering the baskets, I feel as though my heart will stop and I dissolve into tears, stupid I know as it's only a baby one but I am terrified still the same, can anyone suggest an answer please.

Ryan
I have an extreme fear of frogs . ever since a nightmare when I was 4 about frogs It has effected me ever since. Most of the time I am scared to feed my own dog outside because the frogs might jump on me.

Jodi
I terrified of frogs too. As well as toads. I have never met anyone who is afraid of them.

Kaitlyn
I have a fear of people standing on my bed. I totally freak out and cry... the thought of someone else's dirty feet all over my bed really makes me freak.

Romie
OK..after reading these comments about FROGS my hands are sooo sweaty!! I agree with Patricia 100%..the pic disturbd me too!! I have thrown up instant as a slow motion picture of a frog was on tv!! I have a HUGE fear of them...everyone around me "ribbets" and plays tricks on me...I just tell them if they choice to scare me I cant promise my reaction...I dont care what age they are..I will hurt anything or anyone that gets one near me!! and it effects me for days!!

Kacie
this is going to sound really weird. but i have the WORST fear of potatoes. uncooked, or cooked. i can't be around them, and can't smell them or else i will start to cry and then run away. does the fear of potatoes have a name?

leah
i have ophidiophobia, which means fear of snakes. this started in childhood, and as i have no desire to "get over it" (as my family says) by gradual exposure, i'm sure i'll have it for the rest of my life. i can't even stand cartoon snakes and just the thought of them gets my heart pounding. my parents laugh it off and make fun of me, even going so far as chasing me around with a toy snake. they don't understand that the fear is real. i'm so glad to see i'm not the only one who has a phobia.

Andrea Lynn
I am so terrified of frogs, that at times I cannot go outside to my garden. I have about 6 ponds in gardens surrounding me.I so want to have a vegetable garden to help with soaring food costs but it is just beyond me. At any one time there can be as many as 13 frogs on my lawn and patio please can anyone help!!!

carlos
i also have a fear of toads and frogs. i cant go near one. living in the mexican countryside I get to see many of them. i once nearly touched one by accident, it was so scary, i was almost less than an inch from touching one when i was opening the valve for the garden hose. luckily i managed to calm myself down and it wasn't so bad.

N.P
Clowns, but most of all potatoes. Anything to do with them, I always check ingredients, even for potato starch. You can imagine m horror when a clown started juggling potatoes of all things at a fair :(

CLARA
IM AM SO TERRIFIED OF STORMS EVERY SUMMER I SAY IM GOING TO WATCH THE LIGHTENING BUT I JUST CANT IF I SEE IT ON THE WEATHER FORECAST IM A MESS.

T.S.
I am terrified of tire swings, park swings, or anything swinging in the wind wreaklessly (like my hummingbird feeder, or my neighbors wind chime). I was so surprised that I saw many others have said they are also afraid of swinging things, as I have never met anyone else who was. I have been made to feel like a freak because I get panicy at the play ground, or if I am in someone's car and they have something dangling off the rear view mirror. It just scares me, and makes me uncomfortable.

Sparco
ive been petrified of frogs since i was about 16 when i was walking home from work at night and almost stepped on one, nothing major and most people wouldnt have thought twice about it. but now they terrify me. the way they move and everything. i couldnt even look at the picture on this page without my stomach twisting. lol.

Ellie
I hate FROGS and TOADS and Blood and Needles

Lisa
I have many phobias. Frog dissection phobia, fear of drowning, snakes, falling, not to many uncommon ones, but still there they are. My biggest one is frog dissection right now. I have a biology class this term. In 9th grade, I passed out as soon as I saw that frog sliced open. After that, all through high school, I ditched. Now 20 years later, I am back in school and have to do it again. I am terrified. And I don't get it. I'm not afraid of frogs. I don't have a bambi issue (you know, frogs are so cute, etc.), the smell doesn't bother me, so I don't understand where it is coming from.

mrs b
thank goodness im not the only one! i thought i was so silly being afraid of frogs. i will go to extreme lenghts to avoid them and can spot (even sense) them a mile off! spring makes it worse because i work in a school and this is when we do life cycles. around this time i have at least 2 dreams (well nightmares actually) a week about them. dont think i could ever overcome this!!

Debs C
I have had a severe phobia of swinging things since i was young. Its got so bad i have to plan my days out and have to ask my friends not to bring bags with long handles, cameras with straps etc. It really has taken over my life. I recently went to a gallery and everyone had cameras on straps or around there necks. I thought i was going to pass out at one stage. Also if i get invited to a wedding i have a panic attack or just dont go at all. Sometimes if i'm in a pub that has loud music the beat of the music can set off my phobia and what ever you do dont put a yo yo near me. I'm having a baby in September and i can see it now. NO mobile over the crib, No pull along cart (as i have cut the string off) and definately no yo yo's. Poor kid, i dont want to pass my fear onto him but what can i do to control the fear.

Emi
As mentioned before, I have a phobia of the potatoe eyes. I'm pretty sure it's because I hate to be stared at for too long and having so many "looking" at me per say only terrifies me to no end. When I used to wash the potatoes, I had the hardest time trying to hold it without feeling them or looking at them. Now I stay out of the kitchen until they are peeled off. Just having thought about now, though, has made me feel a little sick. Poo.:'(

I have exactly the same phobia as you do. A phobia of frogs and toads. It's so bad, that I dread the end of winter and the first signs of spring fearing that at some point, before the next winter arrives, I'll be confronted with one of them. They absolutely terrify me.

Natalie
I have a massive fear of lifts and actualy going in them.

Marissa
I too have a fear of swinging things. Mobiles, blind handles, signs, and things that operate on perpetual motion send me balmy. I honestly thought I was alone with this. It doesnt keep me locked up at home, as if I see something like that, I just make a conscious effort to not think about it, and try and put it out of my head. I remember when I was about 3, telling my cousins if they didnt go outside and stop the swings from swinging in the wind, they would never stop.. and the thought of that now gives me chills... I wonder why, as it has always struck me as a weird thing to be afraid of? I have tried reading scientific websites that explain how an items speed decreases to nil when an item runs out of energy, but it doesnt help. I am just glad I am not alone.

andrea
i have a huge fear of sharks.i am 11. i am really embarrased about my fear because kids scare me by showing me pics of sharks and i cry and scream.i hold the corners of mags afraid i am going to get bit by the shark that might be on the next page.I don't even go near oceans.in science we were reading about ocean animals. i turn the page and there is a picture of a shark. Its mouth was open to. those pics scare me the most.alll the people who knew about my fear were watching to see what i was doing.i was hiding under my desk crying and screaming.everyone started to make dorsil fins out of thier hands and started prentending to swim over to me.i was so embaressed.some people think i am crazy !I NEED HELP TO STOP THIS!!!!

sandra
Its nice to know that I'm not the only one with a phobia of potatoes. Wonder what that is called?

blank
i have a fear of swinging things! the fear had increased and decreased at certain pinicles of my life. sometimes it is extremely disorientating for me creating severe anxiety and feeling of desperation, i had neva heard of anyone with this fear before until i seen a short doco on the news tonight that mention swinging things as a fear. i mean my fear relates to anythin that swings the sound of swinging or keys smacking against the car while driving! does anyone have this fear and have they cured it?

Nic
i have a fear of the sound of a glass filling up with liquid

Andy
you should not be scared of frogs, they are harmless in this country and will not harm you

steve

Renee
I have a phobia of long grasseven grass up to my ankles

Hannah
My brother is hysterically afraid of stickers and stamps. He cant put on shoes if they have, or have had, a price tag sticker on the inside. My grandmother passes out when she is in an open space like town square.

Sherry
Hi some people make fun of me because i have a terrible phobia of frogs. I couldnt look at pictures, stuff animals and even talk about them. i feel like fainting everytime i deal with them. I am so embarassed

I suffer from a somewhat extreme frog phobia. A few years back a small rain frog had gotten into my house and was hopping out of the kitchen and I was so terrified of it I couldn't go around it, and it hopped towards me so I continued to back up. It chased me into the bathroom actually. I was crying and I felt like such a fool afterwards but it was my reaction.

Kristy
i have a phobia of storms and of pickles i dont know why. ive had it since i was little. my sister use to chased me around the house with a pickle. my friend jamie has a fear of the sky

Tiffany- USA
I have a paralyzing fear of frogs and toads. I have a young son and I dread the day he brings one into the house. I thought about therapy but I know that the goal of the treatment is to eventually touch a frog, something I can not deal with. I am not able to play outside with my children for fear I may happen upon a "toadie." My backyard is off limits from March to October. Glad I'm not the only one.

Jason-Australia
I have a phobia of frogs, too. I did'nt know there were other people out there. Its so relieving. I'm only 14 and I'm afraid I'll have it the res of my life...

Andrea
I adore frogs and toads but I am absolutely petrified of clowns and balloons, A clown with ballons would probably give me a heart attack!

Patricia
I have an extreme fear of frogs and toads even pictures make me stop breathing I feel my chest tighten and I cannot move my mother says that I used to play with them when I was a toddler. I am now thirty years old and I think I have gotten worse over the years or maybe it seems worse because I am no longer a child afraid of something I am a grownup with a real phobia. I hate when people make fun or think they can "cure" me by scaring me with pictures or worse yet their threats to make me touch one. I can feel my chest tightening just typing this. and to the guy who wrote the ridiculous thing about bribing women with shoes I can honestly bet he does not even know what having a real phobia is like I would pay any amount of money to get rid of this. Also I would like to kindly request to the editor of this site to please remove the disturbing picture. I like this site and want to continue looking at the responses but will be unable to do so if the picture remains here. I think this is why so many people find it hard to get help I type "fear of frogs" on my search engine and am always afraid of going to the sites for fear that there will be a picture there. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if a person has a real "phobia" you do not put a picture on the phobia webpage. Anyway if anyone out there has overcome this fear I think that would be the best thing to read about. I used to have a great cat that would kill frogs for me when I was a kid. I have yet to have good luck with any other cat since then. Thanks for this website please consider taking the picture off of it though.

Kelci
is it weird to have a phobia of something swinging like at the pool when a lifeguard swings the whistle around their finger i feel like im gonna cry. it FREAKS ME OUT. i dont understand why i told one person about this fear, luckily they didnt think i was such a freak.AND I HATE CATS THEY CAN DIE.

Louise
I am so pleased to be reading all these comments from people who also have a phobia of Frogs and Toads. I thought I was mad that I always scanned the garden for leaves that might not be leaves. I once carried a frog home in my bag from working at our local stables, kept it in my room over night and didn’t realise until I empted it onto my bed in the morning. These sort of things do not happen to anyone else. But i've had enough. I’m a new Mum and one of my fears is that I may have dropped or thrown my baby out of sheer fear if I saw one so I’m not facing my fear. In fact im sitting at my work desk and have pictures of them all around my desk. Its a slow process and I have no wish to ever hold one, but if I could just walk through the reptile house with my son or walk into the garden without my heart racing I will be happy. This weekend I even looked at a live one through our patio door. I do not want to pass this fear to my son so I took him with me to show it to him. Rationally I would not show my son anything that would hurt or frighten him so I know I must conquer this fear.I didn’t look at the frog or toad or whatever it was for long as the neighbour had to rescue me and whipped it away, but I’m not going to let these slime balls scare me for the rest of my life!

Hannah
My Fear of frogs started when i was about 14. I was at a party with friends when i fell asleep on the sofa. I was woken by a friend throwing a large frog in my face. Very funny haha. Not!!! Since then i cant even look at a picture of a frog without feeling sick. The reason i came on this website was because i was looking for online advice. After taking my friend home tonight i saw a frog in the road and accidently ran over it and couldnt get out of the car. I had to phone my mum to ask my brother to come out and carry me in. Very embarassing especially as he had two mates with him!

Toni
Thank god i am not the only one sacred of Frogs.I am terrified of them.i am not really sure why but i cannt stand them.I was at school once and i was in the school and some said they had seen a frog outside and i started crying and refused to leave the school.I never go out at night or if its been raining.I alwasy think a leaf is a frog though so try to avoide them the best i can.Even pictures terrify me!

Kathleen
I'm terrified of frogs and toads. I came back from taking my daughter to the bus stop this morning and there was an enourmous toad in my garage. Luckily, my neighbor is also afflicted with this same phobia. Her son came over and got rid of it for me. That was over an hour ago and I'm still covered with chills. The thing probably weighed over 3 pounds. It's getting worse and worse every year. I try not to leave the house after dusk during the summer unless I have tennis shoes, knee socks and jeans on. I do have a special friend, my cat. She hates frogs and kills them on site. I call her my guardian. She wouldn't go near the big one in my garage which is good, they are poisounous. Maybe we should all start an online support group!! I never make fun of anyone's phobia. I've heard of some strange ones, but I don't judge others.

Evelyn
My 2 year old son has a fear towards things that make swinging movements like keys hanging (when touched they swing, hammacks and ship steering wheels. I don't know how to help him and don't know if it is really a phobia or at least a known one. I really need to hear more than just comments (in a nice way). I'm forgetting to mention that he's not afraid of the sound these things make just of the swinging motion. When these things move he starts crying and telling me to make them stop. Please help!!!!

Lisa
I am scared of being chased. I have no idea why but it really scares me. Even if it's someone i know it starts out funny but then i get really freaked out. I can't help it though.

Tracey from Shirley
I am terrified of frogs and toads. This is ruining my life. I have had one jump on my leg and this made me scream and cry, I could not breath and my heart was about to burst. I also cannot go outside in the dark, or any time after about 7pm in spring /summer as there always seeems to be one waiting for me. They look like stones or leaves and hide in my flower pots. I never cut the grass or weed and thought pots were safe until they started to jump out when it was watering time, now it is just hanging baskets. They are often in my house and seem to wait in ambush on the step. My husband has fitted a pulley on the washing line so that I don't have to step on the grass to hang out the washing. Tonight when I tried to lock my car from the back door of the house, the remote wouldn't work so I was about to step on to the step I checked carefully though it was fairly dark I thought it was safe and then it moved ! Yes I almost trod on a toad, I was like a thing posessed I rushed in heart beating palms sweating about to cry, I wildly locked the door. Can they open doors or something? Why am I so irrational? It was amazing to know that so many people are the same as me. I am traumatised every night when we go camping and am constantly scanning the ground for any sighn of one. This is no way to live and it is becoming worse every year. I really need to get a grip. The worst thing is I can understand peoples fears of dogs or spiders but I just cannot understand my own fear of frogs I believe tha they have the same rights to live a peaceful life as me ...but somewhere else

Amber
I also am terrified of Frogs but unlike you I have no idea why I feel this way. My siblings think it is funny to chase me around the yard with a frog in their hand even though I ALWAYS endure a panic attack. It is comforting to know I am not the only "freak" out there!

ADELE
I HATE FROGS AND TOADS THEY PETRIFIY ME. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE ALL THE GRASS AND SOIL TAKEN UP IN MY GARDENS IN CASE THEY ARE LURKING. I HAD AN EXPERIENCE JUST RECENTLY AND LEFT ME FEELING ILL FOR DAYS AFTER BECAUSE I HAD WORKED MYSELF UP SO BADLY. I RAN AROUND TO MY NEIGHBOUR AND I WAS IN SUCH AS STATE SHE THOUGHT I GONE AROUND TO TELL HER SOMEONE HAD DIED. I AVOID WALKING THE DOG AT NIGHT,WONT WALK THROUGH LONG GRASS NOR GO STRAWBERRY PICKING IN CASE THERE IS ONE UNDER THE PLANT. I REALLY ENJOY GARDENING BUT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO DO SO FOR THIS PHOBIA. I EVEN HATE THE WORD FROG!!

angel
I am very terrified of frogs. When i was in the 8th grade, we had to dissect a frog in science class. I told the teacher i wasn't doing it and she told me i would get an F if i didn't. Guess what? I took the F . I ahve asthma and being terrified is not good for me at all. I would come home from work and if there is a frog on the house, i would call and ask someone to get the frog off of the house before i go in. Some people thinks its funny, but its not. At this moment, there is a frog in my bedroom and i will not go back in there. I'm 30 years old and i tried to get my eight year old daughter to get it out of the room. she's scared too. I woke my mother up and she tried, but it moved some where and now i can't find it. Guess I'll be sleeping in the livingroom tonight. me and my daughter. what can i use to get rid of them?

Valerie
I'm sorry to say that I'm a bit excited to see that I'm not the only one afraid of frogs! I jumped out of a moving car once because my friend (who knew I was terribly afraid of frogs) threw one through the car window! Luckily, we were only going 15 MPH or so, but I had gravel in my knees & hands so deep, it took hours to pluck them all out! I agree with Diana Mazzei that the picture of the frog on your site was disturbing, though.

Diana Mazzei
This page was very helpful because i realize that im not the only one with a fearof frogs. What didnt help was to see the picture of the toed. I literally had to cover the picture with an envelope while reading the paragraph. I work in gardens and it has become extremelly difficult to deal with this fear.

leanne
am i the only person with a fear of potatoes?? there must be someone else out there.

Anne
Hey. Im 15 and I have two phobias. Spiders and Clowns! Every time I see either one of them I run screaming out of the room. Since I see spiders more often thats normaly the case. I am terribly afraid of clowns and then my mum went and DATED one. I was so scared. I dont think I will ever get over these fears.

Michael
Is'nt it funny that most of the people scared of frogs are women...doh !! did i say that...sure did, my girlfriend is petrified of the green bug eyed webbed feet things, too the point where I have to stop reading out the comments written on this page because she feels sick, i normaly feel this way when liverpool concede a goal..but hey i am a man...their is a pefect cure for this frog phobia imagine every frog you look at is a token and for every token you receive a stamp in a frog book and the more frog stamp tokens you collect the closer is one big frog leap to getting some jimmy choo shoes...now lets see how long that phobia last... !!!

Liz
I'm 18 and have two phobias... sharks and those little things that sometimes grow out of potatoes... that look kinda like roots or flowers or something gross... I have NO idea why but I seriously can't look at them. As far as the sharks go, I sometimes get creeped out by cartoon sharks or drawings... talk about irrational!

lauren wheeler
is there a name for a fear of windows?!?!

Amy
Justin, I too am afraid of potato eyes! My skin gets creepy-crawly just thinking about it!

Simmone

Sam
Same here, my phobia of frogs is awful. I too think that leaves could be frogs, and when I notice a 'leaf' jump I just feel faint.

Sabrina
I have a highly irrational fear of necks, the colour yellow, people who make clicking noises when they chew. Oh yeah, and clowns.

Deanne
I have a terrible fear of frogs & toads. I've been like this ever since I was little. It has gotten worse & worse over the years. I live in the country & every summer there are tons of frogs here. It honestly feels like I'm going to die when I see one because I freak out so much. I don't think you'll ever know what it's like unless you have a phobia like this.

Sharon, Australia
I to have a frog phobia. My mother was afraid of frogs and I can remember my father trying to get me to hold a frog when I was small and mum and I sitting in the room with the door shut so he couldn't get in. I have also had lots of cousins and friends over the years trying to "help" me get over my fear by throwing frogs at me, which has made things 10 times worse. I swore badly at my father in law once when he threw one at me, the words just came out as I panicked, I think he was suprised. Trying to be brave infront of the kids so they don't pick up on it. Am going to see someone about helping me soon.

Imogen
I am 16, i have had a fear of frogs and toads ever since i can remember. i think about it all the time and am constantly scared one is lurking, i even get scared one is under the bed!whenever i see a frog or toad i burst into tears and find it hard to breathe. it takes me ages to calm down afterwards. i hate it that people laugh at my fear and do not take it seriously. i cannot look at frogs on the tv, at photographs or even cartoon frogs! but even though this affects me so much i'm too scared to get help because i know i will have to confront my fear and face the frogs!

joy
my fear is of objects that swing back and forth. like the handle of blinds. I have a fear that it will never stop moving. Many other swinging objects have the same effect.

Kitsune
I used to have the worst phobia of doors. Coming in contact with them, letting people close to me come in contact with them... It's because of an unfortunate accident I had wit a door some time back. It's not a phobia one can deal with very well, and it's not all that great standing outside your school shaking because you can't bring yourself to open the door. I still freak ot a little but I had to get used to it... I moved slowly, and now I can open and close them, but only if they have a latch handle (not knobs or anything).

Jeremy
My girlfriend has an extreme phobia of frogs, that is why I am writing this. I emailed her a few links on Ranidaphobia (to help, not to scare) and she clicked on this one, saw the pic of the frog and had to shut off the computer. That is the only thing she could do, she couldn't move, and she was at work. Best of luck on your phobias all, work on beating them, it will set you free.

Emma
I hate Frogs! I hate the way there always there when you come home in the rain and when you try to move them the squeek. YUK! I used to be okay with them i could hold them and everything. But something has changed...

Scott
I don't like when people mistake FEARS for PHOBIAS. It's ridiculous. Anyone can be scared of something, but not everyone can faint, have a panic attack, and get completley get sick.

Rachelle
I have a phobia of frogs and toads. This fear triggered in my body about 3 years ago. This phobia controls my life. I have gone to extremes to avoid these creatures. I once stayed outside my house for a hour becaue there was a frog at my front door. I can't disect one in my science class this year, which will lead me to fail. I also can't even go camping anymore because my phobia has only gotten worse. My friends have to watch themselves to not use this "the word" around me. People just don't understand most of the tike

me
im really scared of frogs and my family doesnt understand, they say im full of s**t and my sister puts frogs in my room. i dont no what to do about it. whenever i see a frog, i scream, my heart beats really fast and i jump, and i want to get away from it as quickly as possible. my family also says im doing it for attention.

Dave - Staffordshire
I have had a phobia of frogs and toads since I was about four years old. We moved to Florida when I was four and returned to the UK when I was seven. There was a hole in the garden that I decided to fill up with water. I got the hose and started to fill up the hole. Within minutes the garden was full of the biggest toads that you could imagine. I was frozen to the spot screaming my head off. My mother came running into the garden and picked me up and took me into the house. When I was in my early twenties I used to play paint ball quite a lot. One of the lads on my team realised that I had a problem with our frogy friends and thought it would be funny to hold one up to my face. I don’t think he was ready for the response that he got. Without thinking I punched him smack in the mouth and knocked him flat on his arse. I am 39 now and the phobia is as strong as ever. This does cause problems as we like to take camping breaks during the summer and my fiancée is just as terrified of them as I am. As soon as night starts to fall we are imprisoned under canvas until morning.

Leah
I Am 13 Yrs Old And I Am Sooooo Scared Of Sharks That I Cant Even Look At A Picture Of One. Its Only Really When They Have There Mouth Open And I Can See There Teeth. I have one phobia, just one - I'm terrified of water - well, of putting my face under the surface, that is. So I took up scuba diving. Let me tell you, you need to be an absolute HERO to go scuba diving with the intense fear and panic I experienced. I still managed to do it, eventually and to my own surprise. So when I got my certificate, I thought: "GREAT! Now I've finally beaten the phobia - no more fears in my life!"... not so I'm afraid. If I don't go diving for 6 weeks or more, the phobia is back. It takes much less time to overcome it, but the intensity remains unchanged. All I want is to get out of the water and NEVER go back in. Every time I've had to be stronger than the phobia I'm actually surprised when I manage to overcome it - I can't explain just HOW hard it is to do something you're THAT terrified of. Once I'm well and truely submerged, I'm perfectly alright though, within a minute I take my camera out and start enjoying myself, breathing slowly, in control of the situation. Two weeks ago I was even diving with SHARKS! Not afraid for a second, not even when one came within one meter of me. Still, my biggest fear at the moment is not actually fear of water, it's fear that one day, the fear will get the better of me and I won't be strong enough to face it and get through that awful minute or two... there's nothing scarier than fear itself.

shannon
im deathly afraid of needles

Virginia
I have had a phobia of frogs ever since i was born and i know exactly how you feel when you can't open the back door thinking there's a frog out there. Disgusting!!!!!

bumpadum
i'm afraid of doctors. my pulse goes up sky high around them and i feel like they are going to hurt me.

lauren
frogs are fine, i think they are really sweet creatures. I have a phobia of any insects and death, which i have learned the reasoning for this is because everything is out of my control, which is probably my main fear

Lauren
frogs absolutely terrify me, one day my friend decided he was going to try and help me get over that fear. he left me in his car and went off, little did i know, to find a frog, he then came and got back in the car and shoved the damned thing in my face. i was paralysed with fear and i have never been so scared in my life, except for when im around swans or clowns im glad im normal and other people of terrified aswell

aaron

I am afraid to leave my house. I have been here for 2 months now. I am scared to get a new job, because the fear of working with new people takes over, and I just want to crawl into a hole.

Eva SLy
IM Afraid of ,Snakes, spiders, ghosts, thunder, cars, planes, drowning, And Being Raped

Laura
I am petrified of frogs. The picture on this site is horrendous and I had to cover it up while I read the screen. I can not look at pictures of frogs or even talk about them without becoming hot and agitated. I start to stutter too, which is terrible. My phobia is totally ruining my life to the point where i will not walk my dog on an evening in case I see one, I won't go on grass, I check every leaf on the pavement before I go too near incase it's a frog in disguise, I have to be home before dusk as this is the time when are most about, I also drive my children the 5 minute walk to school in autumn/winter in case I see one, dead or alive. I cant go in my garden as both neighbours have ponds and I suffer extreme panic attacks if I see one. I am scared I am going to have a heart attack one day because of my fear. It is gradually taking over my life and I have become moody, stressed, low and panicky since the end of August when the rain set in. I actually had one in my house 3 weeks ago and I had such a bad panic attack my husband couldn't leave me. He eventually arrived at work late and I wouldn't go in the pantry for days. I had to have my parents come round to get food out for me so my family could eat that night. I now check it every time I need to go in there and I feel sick every time I have to. I do not feel safe in my own home now because of this phobia.

Kelly
I too have a phobia of frogs AND toads reading this page I almost feel normal again!! Help is at hand. I went to my doctor previously and was referred to a specialist. I never took up this help as it had a hefty fee per hour. But after yet ANOTHER awful summer I have come to the realisation that it will be a small price to pay to be cured of this phobia to improve my quality of life. My quality of life is seriously affected currently I feel like those scary creatures are taking over!

Rob
I am also phobic to frogs and decided to look for help via the internet. I find this page about another person phobic to frogs and what is the first thing i see - a picture of a frog!!!! I have no idea of what the top of this page says because I cannot have it on the screen. Please, if it a phobia that is meant to help someone- please dont send them into panic by showing pictures.

spencer
Im afriad to leave my house, when i go to leave i get all nervous start breathing heavily and feel like fainting, I often throw up, and I cant seem to fix this.

Hayley
I am like deathly afraid of cotton i cannot stand it! expecially when you pull it abart! what can i do??? it makes me shake when i see it!

Maxine
There has just been another incident. I had just plucked up courage to tidy up my garden, and whilst moving some plant pots, there it sat. How can I get over my fear of frogs, which stops me from venturing to the washing line and prompts me to make wailing sounds, that my family just do not understand - the whole noise lasts for around six minuutes. What can I do???

Destiny
I'm afraid of peanut butter sticking to the roof of my mouth because I might choke on it and die, but I just relax and try not to freak out.

Cammy
I am sooo happy to see that I am not alone!!! I am so scared of frogs! Everyone laughs and thinks that I am crazy, but it isn't funny. I am a grown woman and the sight of a frog makes me cry and just feel so scared. It seems like no matter what, they are around my house, I don't go outside in the warm months at night(afraid I will see one) and unfortunetly my daughter has now learned the fear from me and says she is scared too. The frog pic. made me get chills. My phobia is getting worse every year. And why can I spot them no matter where they are?!

Spicer
I'm just afraid of being anywhere without knowing my car is nearby and I have my mobile phone-can't even be at a supermarket without this knowledge. It's getting worse as I get older-luckily I'm now retired-tried therapy etc. Really restricts life- welcome some advice!

Ian - Shropshire
I am petrified of whales, my wife thinks I'm mad, but I can't help it. Just the smallest glimpse on TV makes me squirm!

Gloralea
I have an extreme phobia of frogs. It also scares me to know that some people may not understand the fear and the possibility that they will surprise me with a frog just for fun. I live in fear of being near gardens, ponds and even when it rains. I've been for holidays to QLD Aust on several occasions and the whole exp was ruined due to my fear of being encountered by one!! I wish I could over come this fear. i dont know how I will react if i was to come in contact with one. I agree with what people have said about the frog pic on this website.. I almost had a heart attack.

Sam
I don't like balloons or rubber bands. I think I'm scared of balloons 'cos one popped in my face while I was blowing it up when I was a kid.

Like Eileen, i too have an exceptional fear of thunderstorms and as i tyoe i am fearing that a storm is brewing. I too have exactly the same symptoms as Elieen. My only problem is i have two very young children to whom i don't want to pass this fear too. I try to act very calm when there is a storm and tend to hand the role of mum to dad. As i am hopeless when there is a storm i shake, and generally go to pieces. My children are so far ok with the weather and only get freaked out if the electric goes off. I pray that i will miss a storm and if i no it is coming i will it to do so in the day time. When i know i will be awake and with others. I have tried so many things to stop this fear but nothing has worked so far. I can remember being little and saying that when i was older i would have a house with a room in it that would have no windows and be sound proof. If only!!! I take comfort to know that there are others that are afraid of the same thing and i know older people than my self who hide under the stairs in a storm. So Elieen we are not alone. Linds

My boyfriend has a fear of elastic bands and hair bands he runs away when ever one is near him. Do you know what this phobia is called?

I am also deathly afraid of frogs (just about died when i saw that picture, what the heck is it doing on this page??). I am so sick of being scared like this and have no idea how to get past it.

I am terrified of thunderstorms. I know I cannot do anything about them but I would do almost anything to avoid being around when there is one. It seems silly but I feel safer if I go into to town where there are lots more people. I will sometimes spend all day just sitting in the library or watch one film after the other at the cinema, which turns out to be very costly. I won't answer the phone at work if there is a storm, luckily my boss is very understanding and my colleagues cover for me. Night storms are the worst because I can't sleep through them. If I know it is going to thunder then I wait for them. I wish I wasn't so terrified. I hate the summer months, like this weekend we expect some and I am already agitated about it. I look forward to winter. Is there any help I can get?

!O Great! I'm not the Only One, with a fear of frogs, my late mum, did used to jump a bit, when she saw one and hated toads, but then when I was 11yrs old I chopped on up in our push along Lawn Mower, so was terrified of them for two years, thought I'd got over it,as I held a baby Froglet, then a few weeks later I was using the Garden Shears, and !Yep! I managed to chop the legs of another frog among the stinging nettles, so I'v been very Bad' about them ever since. HELP!

I sympathise with you and know exactly what you are feeling every time you see a frog. I too have a frog phobia and it is actually stopping me from using my garden as I should. I have a lovely summer house at the end of my garden that I can't use because the frogs live underneath it! I don't know why I have this phobia as I remember playing with frogs as a child - so what has happened to make me have this fear of them? I have no idea! I would love to get rid of them from my garden - I have no pond so why are they here!!??

I completely understand. Frogs terrify me.

I have developed a highly frightening fear of doors. It is not the squeaky sound of entering and exiting, but it makes me jumpy and awkward at night when people leave doors open. I have been teetering on whether or not I have a phobia. I am not sure if it was the horror movie I watched in kindergarden that gave me death nightmares or if I was scared of fires. But having doors shut calms me down and makes me quite cozy. I may not have a phobia though because I am only 10 years old.

I am terribly scared of underwater scenes. The clearer the water, the more frightening it is to me. Also, I am frightened of looking down from a "satellite" position.
