It was Wilfred Owen who said, "All a poet can do today is warn. That is why the true poets must be truthful." For most people their understanding of the First World War is shaped more by the poetry of the war rather than the history.

With some justification modern historians have resented and criticised the poets both for taking over their role as interpreters of history and for presenting a narrow and misleading view of the war.
