The Accrington Pals is probably the best remembered of the battalions raised in the early months of World War One in response to Kitchener's call for a volunteer army.

Groups of friends and work mates, not just from Accrington but also Blackburn and neighbouring districts, enlisted together to form a battalion with a distinctively local identity.

Recruitment began on 14 September, 1914 with 104 men signing up in the first three hours. Ten days later, the battalion had reached full strength with 1,100 men.

Tickets available from Blackburn library. Tel: 01254 661221.
