The British Army registered 80,000 cases of shell shock by 1918. Former soldier, Alfred Hardiman, was declared of unsound mind in 1922 when he murdered his ex-girlfriend by cutting her throat before turning the razor on himself. His family hushed up the tragedy , saying it had been caused by the war. Suzie Grogan uses the story of her great uncle Alfred to examine the impact of the First World War not only on the shell-shocked soldiers and their families but on the home population in general.
