About this location
Stanmore Common is the northernmost of Harrow's open spaces. It is a wonderful place to explore: paths snake through Show more… woods to emerge suddenly in open glades where heather and tormentil bloom, then enter the woods again where ancient mounds hide among the trees. Streams cut tiny ravines through the yellow gravelly soil, spanned by wooden footbridges. The site is not so large that a visitor will get permanently lost, but big enough to ensure that they will find a new glade or stream on each visit. Public transport is by 142 bus running from Watford to Brent Cross roughly every 15-20 minutes. The bus runs past Edgware Tube (Northern line) and Stanmore tube (Jubilee line). Alternatively a pleasant and largely road-free route leads from Stanmore Jubilee Line station through Stanmore Country Park to Stanmore Common. This is described in detail, with a map, on the web site. A third alternative, which however involves walking along a relatively busy road, is to take the 107 bus running every 15 -30 minutes from New Barnet through Borehamwood to Edgware, descending opposite the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Brockley Hill from where it is 15 minute walk along Wood Lane and Warren lane to the Common.Show less…
