Parson Tringham

Parson Tringham

Parson Tringham is the vicar of Marlott. He informs John Durbeyfield of his ancestors the D'Urbervilles, a noble lineage that goes right back to the time of William the Conqueror. He is careful to explain that there is nothing left of the family except "a family vault in Kingsbere", but John ignores this detail.

It is Parson Tringham that Tess comes to in a time of deep unhappiness and trouble. His firm response to her pleading sends her out into the world and away from Marlott.
