Joyce Middlemist and the love of her life for her photo gallery for Telling Lives
Comment: Jane Cropper, Holmfirth: This is also my story, as I am 'baby' Jane. Thank you for helping Mum to make this, and preserve some of our family's history too.

Digital Story

When the World is Free by Joyce Middlemist

Tell us about yourself:
Brought up in a Northumbrian pit village. Scholarship to Grammar School in 1932 (Morpeth). Scholarship to Liverpool University 1940-50. Married 1946. Brought up children 1951 – 1959. Left when widowed 1977. Now eighty-two-years old.

What’s your story about?
How war and its aftermath kept young couples apart and sometimes estranged them.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?
I did nothing heroic during the war but I think our story of a long courtship was typical and it will strike a chord with many other people.
