David Coverdale

David Coverdale

Saltburn born and bred, David is known for his work with Deep Purple and Whitesnake and although he is now settled in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, David took time out to answer a few questions for us...

Just look at that hair!

What are you best known for?

My Yorkshire Puddings!

How did you get started with your career?

I was actually training to be a graphic design artist and an art teacher at Green Lane Art College, and Kirby College of Further Education.

There was economic difficulties at home, with my Dad out of work, and as I wasn’t on a college grant, whatever, I left Art College and worked as a salesman in a boutique called Gentry in Redcar.

Anyway, I had been singing locally for several years, when I saw an article in a music paper called the Melody Maker.

It said that the rock group, Deep Purple, were still looking for a singer, and were considering ‘unknowns’,and, as I was considerably ‘unknown’,I thought I’d try for it.

So, that was the beginning, as it were.Oh,I almost forgot,I got the job!

Was there any person who helped you progress?

Yes, me Mam, she encouraged me from the very beginning.

What’s your advice for anyone following in your footsteps?

Go for it, but make your own footprints.

The top 3 things about coming from Teesside are?

Growing up in Saltburn, the North Yorkshire zero tolerance for bullsh*** has kept me in pretty good stead for most of my lifes journeys. Oh,and me Yorkshire Puddings!

Where are your favourite places in the area?

The beach, the Moors and McCoys restaurant aka The Cleveland Tontine.Oh, can I have 4?.Me Aunties, mustn’t forget them!

Is there anything you miss when away from the area?

I miss me Mam, she passed away some years ago, so, I don’t really get ‘home’ to Teesside much now. I live at Lake Tahoe in Nevada, USA, which is a bit of a distance away...

Can you name 3 other famous people from the area?

David Frost, Charles Laughton and Wacky Jacky! No Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea and Wacky Jacky!

Sum up Teesside in one sentence

The Centre of the Known Universe!
