The
Voices project was a national BBC project that aimed to let people
whose voices were rarely heard have their say on the radio, and
on the internet.
While
the project was in progress, Voices Producer Celeste Hicks left
the comfort of BBC Radio Cleveland's Middlesbrough studios to be
based in the Clarences Community Centre.
Here's
why The Clarences was chosen.
Absolutely
anybody was welcome to get involved in the project - and many residents,
and former residents of the village did.
While
Voices is now finished, you can still get involved in the local
history aspect of the project - see the bottom of this page for
more.
Projects
included:
- The football project: The football project: Aaron and
Graham are running football training for boys and girls under
14 years. They meet at 9.30am on Saturday mornings on the field
next to the Community Farm. We've had an under-14s strip donated
by Swan Hunter, balls and equipment donated from Middlesbrough
Football Club. We've also had our first few friendly five-a-side
matches. We organised a "Voices" 5-a-side tournament
on 28th June which included loads of local teams, and a Radio
Cleveland side.
- Local history project: we've been working with children
in the school to find out about the local history of the Clarences.
We put all their work and photographs, pictures and old maps into
an exhibition at the community centre. Stockton Museums service
helped us provide family tree and local history workshops for
adults in the Community centre for a month.
- Clarences Radio: half an hour of live radio from The
Clarences every Thursday at 6.30pm. We featured news reports and
interviews prepared by local children, features and live interviews
about what was happening in the Clarences, and eventually got
a couple of children to produce and present a whole half an hour
of radio.
- Family Fun and gardening weekend:
on Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th June we made a garden in the
courtyard of the Clarences Community Centre. The garden was created
by volunteers from the Clarences, listeners and staff from Radio
Cleveland. There was also a circus skills workshop for children,
a five-a-side football tournament, a bouncy castle, local craft
demonstrations, live music, a showing of all the best films and
radio from the Voices project, live broadcasting from the event,
and a barbeque.
- Dance lessons:
Mayi gave six Filipino dance classes at the Primary School.
- Basketball lessons: We've raised enough money to pay
for six basketball lessons with Teesside Mohawks for schoolchildren
and teenagers.
Is
it too late to get involved?
The
Voices project has finished on the radio and in The Clarences, but
the local history part will continue here on BBC Tees for the foreseeable
future.
We're
still interested in your memories of Port Clarence, High Clarence,
Haverton Hill and Sweethills.
