If
it's possible to be both understated and buoyant, then these two
words perfectly captured Glenn Tilbrook's return to Teesside, mere
months since his performance at the Georgian in Stockton.
The
'understatement' was the way the former Squeeze man went about rifling
through his old band's treasure chest of songs - plucking out chart
hits periodically throughout the night, with little fanfare.
The
'buoyant' came whenever audience participation was required, such
as his hilarious lesson in harmonies and syllables for 'Black Coffee
In Bed' - to which the near sell-out, partisan crowd rose magnificently.
It
wasn't just his catalogue, either. Someone had no sooner shouted
"T.Rex !" than Glenn launched into Bolan's 'One Inch Rock',
then sealing the double whammy with his own 'Up The Junction'.
A quick
burst of Kraftwerk's 'The Model' to check guitar tuning and then,
unbelievably, we were into the Hendrix classic, 'Voodoo Chile',
with Glenn revelling in the opportunity to let his fingers fly all
over the fretboard.
An
anecdote telling how Jimi had "nicked" 'Up The Junction'
in retaliation for Glenn 'acquiring' Jimi's song when Glenn was
only 9 years old, was only one of several wacky moments.
The
change to 12 string guitar brought the delights of new (?) song
'Third Rail', plus The Kink's 'Sunny Afternoon' and Sonny Terry
and Brownie McGhee's 'Drinkin' Wine'.
Before
we'd all noticed, we were back full circle, via psych, blues and
glam to what Glenn and Squeeze writing partner Chris Difford do
best; pop songs, which is exactly what we were treated to.
Hits
including 'Tempted', 'Goodbye Girl', Pulling Mussells (From The
Shell)', and Labelled With Love ', a quick encore of 'Another Nail
In My Heart' and 'Hourglass' (cue audience participation again),
and he was gone.
