In
fact, the Bowes Museum was constructed by ancestors of the Queen
Mother to house their collection of art and antiquities.
John
and Josephine Bowes built up their collection between 1862 and 1875.
Much
of their collection was made in Paris, and the museum building was
designed to reflect this.
The
museum is home to paintings by Canelletto, El Greco, Goya and Turner.
There
are also exhibitions on the archaeology of County Durham and the
social history of Teesside.

But
the museum's most famous piece is a solid-silver life-size swan.
This
moving mechanical wonder is 225 years old.
The
Bowes Museum is quite simply one of the treasures of the North.
Nowhere
else would you find a large, metropolitan collection of art in such
a rural area.
