Alastair Brownlee

After many years away from the BBC, Alastair returns to the station where he was given his first chance to report on his Beloved Boro.

Place of birth:

8 Byelands Street ,Middlesbrough, within shouting distance of Ayresome Park.

What's your favourite part of our area:

The Riverside Stadium when Boro have just scored a goal.

On rare occasions when I am not watching or thinking about football, I enjoy taking my dog, Benjamin, to the beach at Redcar.

Previous jobs:

When I left school I went to work in a bank to help finance my Boro season ticket!

In 1982, John Allard, who was head of sport here at the BBC, offered me the chance to report on Boro. John knew that I was a keen fan and had belief that I could do a good job. I will always be grateful to him for starting me out in radio.

Why do you love your job:

Quite simply I could not think of anything else that I would rather do. To be in a position to commentate on your favourite team in action is a privilege and the new daily programme starting in July will also enable the station to show what a great region this is for sport.

Most interesting person you have interviewed for radio:

Juninho was voted as Boro's number one player of all time and to interview him was terrific. As a Brazilian international and World Cup winner, he did so much to raise the profile of Middlesbrough Football Club.

Brian Clough was also a memorable interview, he spoke not only about his European cup triumphs with Nottingham Forest but also about his legendary goalscoring record when he was at Middlesbrough. He was very proud of his time at Ayresome Park and is sadly missed.

Person you would most enjoy being stuck in a lift with:

My boyhood hero growing up watching Boro was John Hickton. I have spoken with him on a number of occasions but would enjoy chatting about the great penalties he used to take whilst waiting to be released!

First record you bought:

Boro fans assume it would be the Power Game, a TV theme tune that the team used to run out to, but I was a big fan of Free and I think the first record I bought was "All right Now." The lead singer, Paul Rodgers, came from Middlesbrough so that also helped.

Where you are when you get most of your inspiration or creative thoughts:

In the commentary box at the Riverside Stadium

Funny sayings you like to use:

After the UEFA Cup semi final success over Steaua Bucharest, I did invite every fan to my house for a parmo! Supporters still ask if they can come round but as my wife, Wendy, says my cooking is dreadful so they probably wouldn't enjoy it!

Any habits, annoying or otherwise:

According to my family I do spend far too much time on football but I think they are used to it by now, at least I hope

Hi AliIs your interview with Bruce Rioch on tomorrow's show recorded, a 'phoner or is he live in the studio? ThanksAlan Bell

dazza
i have a packet of peanuts for you

Please ask Neil why since he joined the Boro we now have to pay for our season card before the end of the season? His previous answer was obtious saying that it was the same as last year. Will it change back once he has left the club? I hope so because otherwise as fans we can only show our ire by not renewing.

Thank you very nuch for giving up your time to come and present trophies at the TJFA presentation night last night. It was my sons first (and maby last, who knows) awards ceremony. It was a spectacularly professional night and once again I would just like to thank you for your part in what was a magical and memorable night for my son, his teammates and their families

Barry
Listening to your interview with Steve Gibson. He is sounding more and more like Hirohito: "The season has not gone to our advantage". For God's Sake, things are dire and someone must take the blame. Southgate is a "nice bloke" but so am I and I would play players in their rightfull positions.Have been watching Boro since 1958 and have never felt more angry!

fred o'boyle
Why stand by gareth when Bryan Robson was in this position you reacted by fetching in Terry Venables to help save Boro from relegation yet this time you havent reacted may i ask what's different this time.

Pam Slater
Just listening to the Fans' Forum this evening. Bernadette may believe that Boro shirts are prevalent in Hartlepool. Rather Sunderland and Newcastle shirts are pre-eminent. As a Boro season card holders who find away games too strenuous these days - standing and long uncomfortable coach journeys - my friends and I go to Hartlepool home games when Boro are away. It is annoying to hear the Poolies cheer if Boro are losing at half time but also cheering if Sunderland or Newcastle are doing well. So I don't think Poolies care if Boro go down and my inclination is to stop going to watch them in future. In any case the best bit is seeing Hangus doing actions to Two Little Boys!Come on Boro

keith
Question for Chris hes mentioned Richie playing out of position but the same can be said of Ben Clarke and the back 4 looks stronger with him in there why perservere with him in centre mid

Peter Crooks
Why dont we try Pogi in front of the back four at the week-end against Wolves?Back four would be Taylor, Wheater, Huth or Rigget and McMahan.Midfield Pogi, Downing Johnson and O,Neil with Tuncay Alves up front.

stephanie quinn

AlastairUnfortunately am not able to tune in full time to radio reports on Boro's matches but when I do I find that the current score line is not repeated often enough and frequently struggle to find out what is happening in that area. Please could you repeat the scores more frequently. Thanks in anticipation.

Mr K A Sexton
I think you should interview the Middlesbrough, Darlington and Hartlepools Goal keeping Coaches

andy may
please could you ask juninho and craig could help set up a campaign to get juno to come and play for us in the masters

Hi Alistair, I've always admired the passion you show in your comentaries and broadcasts regarding the Boro.As a one time ever present home supporter of the Boro (and regular away supporter - I share your hero worship of Hickton) but a long time convert to Billingham Bombers ice hockey I would like to say a massive thanks for the coverage you gave to Bombers this week on your excellent programme.I do hope you can continue to support and spread the word about the Bombers.I'd love you to come along to a game at the Forum some day. I'm sure Allen Flavell would be more than happy to invite you to a game and Andy Baxter could sit with you and explain any queries you might have about what's going on.As I said, I was a Boro fanatic (and the Boro still have a huge place in my heart) but ice hockey is the most fantastic sport to watch...it demands passion, honesty, skill, strength, aggression, honesty and respect. You play a big part in sport in Teesside, Alistair, and good for you for promoting the less 'mainstream' sports. On a separate not I was also delighted that you had Jimmy Wattis on your show - I have massive respect for the way Jimmy has promoted, developed, managed and supported the Tees Pride 10K with enthusiasm and honesty.People like yourself and Jimmy promote all the best things in sport. I'm a regular runner but in my opinion the best sport in the world is ice hockey and the sport is exemplifeid at Billingham Bombers.I wish you every success and hope maybe some day you can come to a Bombers game and see for yourself, Alistair,Regards,Mick Fern

les

PETER JORDISON
congratulations ali on the wba comentry you mentionioned downing was captain 10 yes 10 times any particular reason for this ?

James.w.higgins@shell.com
Ali,firstly how nice to have you back your commentry on the Boro games is always excellent.I have however a point to make regarding the teams performance that you and Gary appear to gloss over at times.I have followed the Boro and been a supporter from the Bob Denison Harold Sheperdson times and been a season ticket holder for many years. The team we have at the moment has missed for a long while a creative mid field player,I think everyone who watches the games knows this so why didnt Mr.Southgate buy one? I am sure the fans after the games listening to his comments are getting sick of the same old reterick from him.It is terrible laying the blame at someones door but he as the manager must stand up and be counted. We as one of your callers said on Saturday have had journeyman mangers for the recent history, would Mr Gibson trust his company to a manager without the relative experiece to do the job.If the fans can see problems why cant he? You do your best to put over a good comentry making The Boro sound as though they are doing well but a spade is a spade no matter which way you look at it.I only wish the Boro were playing half as good as you try to put over and infact if they were half as good as you at their work we would be at the top end of the division.

Jared Weatherill
It's great to hear you commentate again. I really missed you last season. I have been listening to you since I was a boy. Keep up the good work.

Terry from Ingleby
Alastair,Good to hear you back on the airwaves today.Boro commentary has resumed top quality service.

Peter Lonsdale
Hi Alistair, last night I heard you talking about the Middlesbrough 10K run, and wondered if you can help Middlesbrough Roller Hockey Club. Just like our local football club did a couple of years ago, MRHC has just qualified for Roller Hockey’s equivalent of the UEFA Cup, which is called the CERS Cup (pronounced SERS) for the first time and face a tough task of facing a semi professional team from Dusseldorf, Germany in the 1st round. However in order to be able to pay for the additional costs of home and away legs we need to raise a minimum of £3000 to pay for the additional training, venue hire and travelling costs. The Roller Hockey Club have entered the 10K run for additional fitness training and to try to raise some much needed cash. All of the players will be taking part in full strips and enjoying what promises to be a very good day out. We are looking for sponsors from the Teesside area, which can be in the form of donations, sponsoring an area on the club shirt or shorts or even just sponsoring a player to complete the run. We are a small club and punching well above our weight, just like the Boro were when taking on and beating the likes of Lazio, Steau Bucharest etc. We play in the traditional Boro Kit of all red, with a white band across the chest. Anyone interested can contact us at www.boro-rhc.com or by calling me on 07891 163992. Peter Lonsdale

Hi AlastairQuestion for Gary Havelock on your show tonight...Having been privileged to watch Gary's career since he started at Middlesbrough does he think he'll see out his riding career at Redcar and what will he do when he stops riding?

Glyn
Hi Ali,Can I ask Gary Havelock on your programme tonight what he thought of Great Britain's performance in this years World Team Cup?

stirling
