Fahad and Zunera

Abingdon School Steel Band

They've got an enviable reputation. Abingdon School Steel Band have performed at Middlesbrough Town Hall and The Riverside. And now they've conquered the BBC Tees reception area. Fahad and Zunera from the band tell us a bit more..

"We auditioned for the Steel Band in July 2007.

"Ten children were chosen and then we practiced five songs during summer school"

In September the group started performing at different occasions. First gig was at the Town Hall Council Chambers for the Citizenship Ceremony. Next it was the Middlesbrough Road Race.

"We were lucky enough to perform at the Durham University Fresher's Day and at the Riverside Stadium prior to the match against Chelsea"

"We have been well supported by Boro Taxis and Sainsbury’s, and it was pleasing to play at the supermarket last Saturday following a Friday evening at St Mary’s Cathedral in Coulby Newham.

The band practice every Tuesday and Thursday after school with their two music teachers Mrs Ross and Mrs Maughan

"Our two teachers are lovely, and explain things very clearly. We work together as a team, and ensure that everyone is available for every practice and performance"

And team working certainly is the name of the game. Even when it comes to loading and unloading the drums. Everyone gets involved - even teachers like Mr Ghafoor and Mr Cape.

"Being in the Steel Band enables us to develop our personal skills, and gives us exciting experiences. We love it!"
