Acklam HallWith Middlesbrough College preparing to move out into its new building at Middlehaven, Acklam Hall's future is still undecided, but its place in the history of Teesside is one that few can dispute.
There has been a hall at Acklam for at least a thousand years, with the Domesday Book recording the Acklam estate as being in the possession of Robert de Brus. In 1637, the estate was bought by a wealthy draper, called William Hustler. His grandson, Sir William Hustler built the present hall between 1680 and 1683. Initially a two storied building, a second floor was added in 1845. ![]() Acklam Hall and campus buildings. Anyone who works at The Hall will tell you of The Grey Lady, believed to be the ghost of Charlotte, wife of William Hustler, who died following an illness shortly after the birth of her second child around 1800. The Hall was sold to Middlesbrough Corporation in 1928 for £11,500 and became Acklam Hall Grammar School, later to form part of Middlesbrough College. ![]() How the new Middlesbrough College will look. As Middlesbrough College prepares to exchange these grand surroundings for their ultra-modern replacement being built at Middlehaven, the future for Acklam Hall is still unclear, though a number of potential pruchasers are known to be in talks about taking on the site and, with it, responsibility for this Grade I listed building. last updated: 03/04/2008 at 15:55 SEE ALSOYou are in: Tees > Places > Places Features > Acklam Hall |
