Presenter Tim Ellingford

Songs from the shows

Every Sunday afternoon between 5 and 7pm you can hear the very best music from the stage and screen.

Presenter Tim Ellingford says….  "This is my favourite part of the week.  For a couple of hours I unleash a variety of songs from modern or traditional musicals.  There are more to showtunes than "Don't Cry For Me Argentia" from Evita or "Memory" from Cats which seem to be played to the exclusion of other equally good tunes which is exactly where "Songs From The Shows" comes in, playing  a mix of classic favourites and introducing new show tunes.

As well as the music we'll hear about local productions and regularly we catch up with leading performers who are in our area.  Recent guests have included Michael Ball, Dave Willetts, Sally Anne Triplett and Tommy Steel.

Although Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice may dominate the modern musical scene we also play music from Stephen Sondheim, Cy Coleman and Rodgers and Hammerstein.

So, that's a little bit about the show I could go on but I will leave that for the programme join me live or on  listen again to hear about my passion for Musicals.

Welcome along I hope you enjoy the show !!"

If you want to choose the featured musical or dedicate a showtune to a friend e-mail Tim at showsongs@bbc.co.uk.

Listen live every Sunday between 5 and 7 pm on 95 FM and digital radio or on-line and don't forget you can listen again to the latest edition of the show for a week after broadcast by clicking the link at the top right of this page.

I do greatly enjoy listening to your program and the other BBC programs playing great show music. I am wondering if your program will be moved to the new BBC iPlayer soon. I see that it is not there presently. Please continue the great programs

I listen every week.Brilliant! I thought it was good before but the new format including classical and film scores makes this a must listen. How about "Stop the World I want to get off"?

I would love to hear some music from the musical "Seussical" it's not too well know in the UK but is a huge hit in the USA. There's some fantastic music! I am going to see it at the Gala Theatre in Durham this October and can't wait. thanks.

My 3 showstoppers have to be, "Ladies who lunch" from Company (Barbara Walsh version preferably), "Your the top" from Anything Goes and "Time heals Everything" from Mack and Mabel. All have special meaning to me as well as being great shows from 3 of the best Musical theatre composers of all time.

Hi TimLike yourself I'm a little bored with endless revivals. Let's have some exciting new shows. Joseph and Grease have been done to death and I don't mean old pop songs strung together with dreadful dialogue. There is talent out there but while the West End is a cartel controlled by a few people the situation will not change. Thanks for a great show, I listen on the internet every week. best regards, Colin Chaston
