It's easy being green
Apart from trying to persuade your parents to buy energy-efficient lightbulbs, eco-friendly cleaning products and recycled loo roll, what can you do? Here's a list...
Factoid Every year the average dustbin contains enough unrealised energy for 5,000 hours of TV Assure
At home
- Layer up instead of turning on the heating. For an efficient way to get warm, wear a hat: a lot of heat escapes through your head.
- Turn the tap off while you brush your teeth.
- Bag up your tatty old clothes, shoes, scratched CDs or DVDs, broken iPod, books, school exercise books, etc, and take them to your local tip (look in your local area directory under 'recycling').
Shopping
- Eco fashion is a growing industry, but it's expensive. If you can't afford to buy eco, look for the Good Shopping Guide in the library to find out the greenest high-street shops.
- Or buy vintage: befriend your local charity shops. Or take a bus to a posh area and look in the charity shops there. Voila designer bargains.
- Keep an old carrier in your school bag so you don't have to get a bag every time you buy anything (it doesn't have to be Tesco – buy something tiny from your favourite designer store and ask for a large bag : P).
- Buy snacks and drinks with as little packaging as possible, and look for packaging that says it can be recycled.
