AKA
Booze, drink, bevvy, brew, brewskis, grog, hard stuff, jars, poison, snifter, tinnies, tipple, and the chemical names are ethyl alcohol and ethanol
Alcohol factoid Over 5% of 14-15 year olds, and just under 10% of 15-16 year olds in England drink more than the UK guideline healthy limits for adults. (Institute of Alcohol Studies, 2002)
What is it?
The alcohol that we drink is made by fermenting or distilling fruit, vegetables and grains. This is where it gets its distinctive flavours from. In its pure form ethyl alcohol is a clear, colourless liquid. Alcohol is one of the strongest mood-changing drugs in use today.
How does it make you feel?
Alcohol makes you feel relaxed, cheerful and confident. Drinking too much is pretty unpleasant. The room spins, you get sick, slur your words and lose your memory. Some people get stroppy and aggressive. The day after a drinking session you'll probably get a hangover. You might feel sick, thirsty, tired, washed out and a bit low.
What are the health effects?
The UK government has set guidelines on limits for healthy drinking. These are a maximum of 21 units a week for adult men (over 18 years), 14 a week for adult women. The limits are lower for under 18s. And remember the guidance is for a week - drinking all your units at once (binge drinking) is definitely not healthy. There is 1 unit to half a pint of weak beer and 2 units in the average alcopop. (see further info below). Drinking alcohol increases your chances of having an accident of some sort. Or doing stuff you'd regret the next day. Stick with mates who will look out for you. Alcohol is the most common date rape drug. Be wary of getting drunk with someone that you don't know very well. Alcohol can be addictive. If you drink regularly you will build up a tolerance to it and you'll need more and more to get the same effect. Then you get really nasty withdrawals when (and if) you stop. Long-term drinking can damage your heart and your liver, and it really messes with your head.
The law
Alcohol is a legal drug although under 18s are not allowed to buy it.

yess i drink once or twice a week at the weekend... so what ?? u can have a gd laugh with ur m8s however i do think there are a lot of dangers, but just about everythibg u do will have some kind of danger. You just have to make the right choices and think about what ur doing, stick about with people you no and trust especially if uve had quite a lot even though it can be hard when ur out and with other people. U only live once and if u choose to drink go out and enjoy yourself but i recomend u dont go over the top unless u wont an embarrising day the day after

I with James 17! drinking is good!!!

Why are so many people talking about peer pressure and stuff? I mean alot of people my age drink cus they wanna have fun, not cus their friends do it, infact some of their friends could try to stop them, i know this cus it happend in my group of friends and the underage drinking had nothing to do with peer pressure or anything x
joe, 14
yeah its bad but who really cares when your drunk with ur m8s every now and then...
Rosie, 14
I used to drink alot, even at my age. now i drink alot less but havn't stopped compleatly, even though i want to, i always give in to peer pressure. my advice is to never start drinking in the first place, it is a slippery slope as i found! my first time, i ended up getting paraletic and doing something which i really regret, but even that didn't stop me. Now, i have realised it is not clever or big to drink, you just end up embarressing yourself and acting stupid. only drink around people you know and trust as alcohol makes you vulnerable, or better not at all!good luck and just remember it is sad to need alcohol to have fun! xxx
Claire, 26
My advice for anyone who is thinking getting drunk is clever would be 'STOP!'. I've missed out on so many things, hurt so many people and destroyed my self confidence because of drink. However cool you may think it is, one day you may look back and realise the detrimental effects it's had on you and others. I've lost the respect of family, some friends and a good fiance because I thought drink helped. It doesn't.
james, 17
I think every1 should just go out and get drunk!!! whos with me?
Sarah, 16
if people are going to drink they are going to drink. putting the law up wont stop them. you can just get people to go into the shop for you :|. i used to go out &} drink until i fainted then realised how stupid it was. you need to grow up if thats what your gna do :)

For me alcohol was always kind of exclusive until I turned 18. Now I love it! I shouldnt drink as much as I do but if the laws were more relaxed it wouldnt be as much fun. If I was allowed to have itin small amounts and drink responsibly with meals before I turned 18, I wouldnt drink any where near as much as I do now. I think raising the legal drinking age will just encourage teenagers like me to think of ways around it and definately not work with them system.
Jessie, 15
okay, i'll admit it, i drink alcohol quite alot. and it will make me ill blah blah. but im a silly teenager. teenagers need to make mistakes so they stop themselves from making them again. and for some people drinking is an escape route from family problems or something. so give us a little bit of slack every once n' a while please. x
Lauren, 16
Tbh, i think its upto the people that are drinking. If they want to drink then its upto them isnt it really. I drink altho my friend is younger than me and she needs a liver transplant. But i have got drunk a few times and done stupid things. Ive even hurt myself on purpose under the influence but like my parents said its my life, i can do what i want.
mike, 20
I know it's hard but to everyone who drinks to alter their personality and supress feelings of inadequecy (i.e. being shy, not being able to have a good time etc), by the end of your night you will have increased these feelings about yourself 10 fold. take it from me, i've been doing it for years now.
Jonny, 16
I've just stopped drinking irresponsibly after I died for a few minutes and looking back it just seems messed up, especially how people were when they were drunk.
Rosie, 14
well i get drunk like every friday + saturday night and like get trashed, but its not becuase were adicted or anything.. its cuz theres nothing else to do + we can get it cheep + easy! this summer ive got wasted so many times! i would like to stop but whare i live there is nothing to do... ive never had a hangover + cant remember what happened the night before, usualy gone back to someones house or slept at the beach! x
Melany , 23
My brother died from liver chirrosis last year and it has devastated my family, we could see him deteriorate before our eyes and it was very distrubing, if that sort of thing doesn't put people off drinking nothing will, it's the harsh reality some people need to face and be shown for it to hit home to them.
Sophie, 14
yes helping people is a great idea but i still truly belive nearly every-teenager gets involved with drink in some way or another. alcohol doesnt help your body or anything but at the end of the day everyone makes choices in life and what every they decide its there decision and it people think its smart to ge steaming untill they phsicly cant walk then i can tell you it isnt smart and also its (influence + Image) i truely belive thats the main causes to Drinking really badly. or something has happend in the past and they want to get over it .. i do know people like that and feel sorry for them. and to drink alcohol isnt bad at all its perfectly normal. but when peopel take it TOO FAR then yes thats when its outt of control.
Tony, 15
I Dont EVER drink, because i have a strong moral issue with it.My mum died of drink earlier this year, and lots of people call me a faggot for not drinkin'. I just dont listen.
james, 15
People saying that many teenagers have a problem are quite wrong. I have an older brother who will buy me alcohol around once a week. I dont go out for the sole reason of getting drunk, it acts as a social lubricant, yes you can guarantee that one of the girls will drink too much but then we are friends so we make sure they are ok. if neccessary we ring their parents to pick them up. im not sayin its big and hard to drink all the time but it can make things all the more fun.
annoynamus, 15
Awk who actully cares :)) I drink all the time and i like it. Dont mean your a bad person its our own choice if we stay out drinking till we have collapsedd :) If we enjoy it why not do it ? Peronally i think the ages should come down to 16 :)
Marie., 16
The way i see it you live once, you never know when your time is up. Yes it can be dangerous to drink alcohol but i think if youre having fun and you're with your mates and people who care about you, You should be able to drink as much as you want and just have a good time. I think its wrong that buying alcohol in supermarkets you have to be 21? But you can learn to drive at 17?! Whatt?! It should be the other way around. x
Jess, 14
I dont get why teenagers stay out and drink until theyve collapsed and need theyre stomachs pumped its unhealthy and can probably effect you in later life there are lots of people who have told stories about alchahol and its really put me off going out drinking heavily i think if people know that others have a problem they should get them help otherwise it will make everything worse
jazmynne, 17
i think the legal drinking limit should be the same everywhere as it is in the us 21! because even at that age some people still dont drink responsibly! im only 17 and i do drink, but only around people i can trust and know well... but its still not a good thing! i have 4 younger sisters, and if any of them were to start drinking as young as i did i would be really mad! so if yo0h dont drink because ur not old enough my only advise is dont start... take ur time and wait it out, you have ur whole life ahead of u to do it if u choose!
Charlotte, 16
Alcohol can be more dangerous than you think. Me and my "mates" used to drink almost every night and that was really irresponsible. I had to go with my "best friend" in the ambulance 4 time because in the state she broke her ankle, her arm, her wrist and picked up glass from a broken bottle and sliced a deep two inch by 1 inch cut into her arm. I recently realised how childish they were and left them, and i feel so much better. We never did anything anti-social to speak, but everytime another news report comes on or an anti-social behaviour team comes into school i get so worried and scared. Dont make yourself like this. Im a nice, decent girl but i hung round with the wrong people... Make sure it doesnt happen to you and ditch the peers who pressure you! Its Not Worth It.
rachel, 14
Yes, i think that we need to help those out there that have a problem. but i also think that you are your own person and you shouldnt be influenced by others. You live your own life. I am a person who has never got drunk or out of their face because i think that it is stupid to go out and get pissed because your friends are doing it. No one tells you or forces you to get drunk or take drugs. But i think that some vulnerable people put there look for role models and end up with the wasted celebs to influence them. The media doesnt help either. The media only show us what is going to sell.. You have your own choice no one lives your life but just you!!!!...so think next time you want to get drunk n smashed...are people really going to take you serious if you are throwing up over them???.....xx
