Are we growing apart?

A girl looking confused

I have a problem that's making me feel very sad -I feel an old friend of mine makes me feel bad just cause I've changed since we've left middle school to go to other highschools.

She makes comments about how i dress, the fact i like boys now,ect... She says many things i find hurtful and continually remarks i've changed for the worst but it's not true!

What can i say because she's making me feel bad for what i am simply am :'-( Please help.

A girl looking upset

Hi Lola,

People don't like change. For some it's exciting and new. For others it's scary and unwelcome. I think your friend isn't enjoying all these unwanted changes.

There could be lots of reasons behind your friend's new behaviour. Maybe she's jealous of your clothes and new interests. Perhaps she's scared you won't have as much time for her.

Although it's tough at the moment the most important thing is to stay in touch, even if it's just short texts or emails. Try and meet her somewhere quiet and say how much her comments hurt you and why you think they're not true.

Have a catch-up and talk about the 'old times' but don't forget to ask about her new school and friends. There will be stuff there that's the same for both of you. Find out what's new with her.

Sadly, you might just grow apart. Not seeing her everyday and other demands on your time may take their toll. You're not in touch with everyone you went to kindergarten with!

But seriously, there may be differences between you now that will mean you can't have the same relationship you used to. And that's a pity but don't let it stop you making new friends.

Even if you lose contact now, maybe in the future you'll meet again and be surprised what you now have in common!

Your thoughts:

Two girls

Hi Lola,

I know what you're going through because I went through it in year 10. My friend was constantly critising my clothes, the guys I liked and who I hung around with because it wasn't always her.

What I did was: I spoke to her and got her to understand that, yeah I have changed a bit, I may wear different clothes, like a couple of guys but I'm still me.

It took a while for her to accept it and we didn't talk for a while, but now we're best friends again.

My best advice would be to talk to her about how it's making you feel. Try and get it so that it's just you and her who talk, so that she listens.

Oh, and remember, you are what you are, you shouldn't worry about what other people think. As one of my favourite songs goes "I am what I am, I can't help myself, and if you've got a problem, better take it somewhere else".

Hope I've helped :)...don't forget to smile.

Next week's question:

I'm on my 2nd year of my secondary school. I made loads of new friends at my first and they usually invite me to come over but my mum say that she doesnt know them so im not allowed.

I always say that she has to get know them but she never has time. Now, my friends think i'm ignoring them. What should i do?
