Friends, eh? They can be flippin hard work. You keep emailing us about them, so we're putting as many of your questions as we can up here >>>

Worried that my friend will start smoking

A hand holding a lit cigarette

My friend keeps talking about starting to smoke. I try to convince her not to and she isn't worried about lung cancer.

I think she's might start because she thinks people might think its cool and she'll be really popular.

It will probably get her expelled from school if they catch her. I don't know what to do or tell her. Please help!

Worried, 15

The yellow-toothed grin of a life-time smoker

I have gone through the same thing with friends and boyfriends in the past. Everyone knows the facts with smoking, so it baffles me that people still start. You are an ace mate to try and get her to see sense.

Are you sure she knows all the health issues associated with smoking? For example, increasing her risk of cancer, heart and lung disease, as well as giving her bad skin and yellow teeth? Not to mention the cost of funding the habit.

The thing is, preaching to her about all this probably won't stop her wanting to be cool. Though as both you and I know, it obviously isn't cool, and is not the key to being popular amongst your school mates.

Talk to her, and ask her to imagine how her parents might react if they found out she was expelled for smoking - it might put her off.

If you can't reason with her that way, you need to show her that it isn't cool. If you know anyone popular at school who doesn't smoke (especially someone she fancies) point them out to her. She'll get more respect from people for not following the crowd anyway.

If you can't get through to her, and it doesn't feel right talking to a teacher or her parents about it, know that you've tried. She's going to grow up and realize how silly she is being eventually. But with a mate like you by her side, I'm sure she'll find the right way.

Check out some info about smoking on The Surgery advice pages.

Don't give up on her!

Your thoughts:

A lit cigarette smoking

Over this past year all of my 12 closest friends have started to smoke even the ones that have said they never would.

I have tried to tell them to stop but it's just not working, so I know exactly where you're coming from.

All you can really do is present your friend with the facts about smoking, tell her how much she will smell how yellow her teeth and fingernails will go, and just hope she listens.

At the end of the day it is her body and her choice. All you can do is warn her.

Next week's question:

Hey,

Just recently I found out my best mate fancies me (he's a boy by the way).

The thing is, I already have a boyfriend and my mate is younger than me anyway.

How do I tell him that I don't like him that way without really hurting his feelings and breaking friends?

Carmel, 15
