Friends, eh? They can be flippin hard work. You keep emailing us about them, so we're putting as many of your questions as we can up here >>>

How can I make friends after I move to a new school?

Kangaroo on a yellow sign

My family are thinking of moving to Australia. I have cousins over there and I'm not too worried about it. It's just the fact of going to school for the first time. I'm not worried about being alone. Not too much.

My oldest cousin will be in the same school as me but not in any of my classes, so how would I be able to walk in without wanting to run out again? Any tips on making new friends with people from different lifestyles? xx

Hey Isabelle,

I'm really impressed by what a cool cucumber you are! You're all like, "Yeah I'm not too worried about moving... starting a new school, so what? Lonely? Don't think so!"

This gives me lots of confidence that whatever happens you are going to be fine!

You've already had a first day at primary school and probably at a secondary school too. A new day in a school in Oz will be pretty much the same, but everyone will have accents like they're off Neighbours.

What I mean is, it won't be anything new, and you can totally handle it.

For starters you'll be the cool new kid from the UK! I'm sure everyone will want to know where you're from, and why you're there. So have an amusing anecdote at the ready!

As a newbie in Australia there will be tons of things you don't know, so use this as an opportunity to engage with other people and ask them questions.

You'll get to find out new things, and whoever you're talking to will feel really knowledgeable. It's all about making connections, and finding out who you get on with.

So, when it comes to walking in that classroom for the first time, don't panic! Relax, smile and be friendly - everyone else will be wondering who that mysterious British girl is who just sauntered in.

Good luck with everything - and keep visiting Slink!

Your thoughts:

A large group of friends

I moved to Australia when i was 16, new school and all - it's very different but the people are SO friendly you won't feel like running out.

Plus they'll be facinated by where you're from and definitely by your accent! So I don't think you should stress out about making friends, cause the aussies will love you :)

Just remember to be yourself and ask them questions too. Making new friends is a good experience, especially in a new country. I'm quite certain you'll be fine! Good luck x

Next week's question:

My friend keeps talking about starting to smoke. I try to convince her not to and she isn't worried about lung cancer.

I think she's might start because she thinks people might think its cool and she'll be really popular.

It will probably get her expelled from school if they catch her. I don't know what to do or tell her. Please help!

Worried, 15
