Why do boys call anything that's sweet "lame"?
By sweet I'm guessing you mean romantic films, holding hands, compliments, friends hugging, cats dancing, things with glitter on them. in other words, lame stuff.
Boys like things that have any of the following qualities: funny, skilful, violent, intelligent, exciting, sexy, surprising, tasty. Just one will do. So where's the attraction in sweet? Cakes, chocolate biscuits, Skittles - these things are sweet. The other stuff listed has no redeeming features (except for cats dancing, which I admit would be surprising).
Many boys mistrust sweetness. When people do and say nice, gooey things, we reckon they're just being fake. At least when boys are nasty and punch you in the head, it's a genuine reflection of their personality.
The other reason boys label this stuff lame is because we have to follow what other lads do. Even if we were genuinely touched by a soppy love scene on the OC, we couldn't admit it because our crew would say we were a big girl.
We're always told to 'be ourselves' and not to fear being different. But the harsh reality is that it's often the boys who are 'different' that get beaten up. It's much easier to blend in and avoid controversial girly outbursts.
There was a kid in my school who liked flowers. He owned a yellow cardigan with flowers on the buttons. Lovely lad. He looked very sweet. At least twice a week, someone would get him in a headlock.
The episode taught me a valuable lesson: to stop wearing that cardigan.
Slink says:
Whatever Kev! We still think being different rocks and we'd choose the sweet boys any day. You looked hot in that cardigan and you know it!
Please remember: Kev is not an expert, he is just a boy and sometimes quite a silly boy. The main thing to remember when it comes to lads and relationships is to expect respect as the absolute minimum. Find out more about a Women's Aid campaign of the same name.
