  • Winter reads
  • A girl reading a book on the beach

Lying about in the sun with a good book has to be one of the best parts of summer.

In no particular order here's ten of our fave summer reads to keep you entertained throughout the hols.

The Luxe front cover

1) The Luxe series by Anna Godbersen

A rip-roaring-love-story-epic set 100 years ago. So witty and passionate you wish you were there, and so vivid you feel like you are.

Cover of Black rabbit summer

2)Black Rabbit Summer by Kevin Brooks

Five friends meet up for what turns out to be the worst night of their lives. The fairground promises fun but provides shadows and mystery.

This gripping novel has done the rounds in the Slink office and everyone has enjoyed it, despite it being deeply dark in places.

Sisterhood of the traveling pants series

3) Summers of the Sisterhood series by Ann Brashares

A fave amongst the Slink Team. The series perfectly captures the intimacy of great friendship, the ache of family stress and the pain of broken hearts. You won't put the books down as the four friends, laugh, love and grow over each summer.

Thirteen Reasons Why cover

4) Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

"There are thirteen reasons why your friend died - you're one of them". Gripping novel about how even the small things we do in life can have a dramatic effect on others. A great page turner that kept Slink Aiss entertained by the pool this summer.

What I Was cover

5) What I Was by Meg Rosoff

Lonely schoolboy Hilary is struggling to fit in when he meets Finn. This coming of age story captures the heartache of first love and takes you on a journey that ends with a twist. Switch Charlie thought it was brilliant.

A train that could be from Victorian times

6)The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

It'll take you back to being a kid and have you wanting to bake scones and do good to your neighbours Victorian stylee.

The cover of The Night World

7) The Night World series by L. J. Smith

Stormed through the 'Twilight' series? Finished the 'Buffy' boxed set? Anne Riced out? Luckily for you there's no shortage of vamp/human love stories in this series of mini-novels. More than enough to sink your teeth into, some might say. (If they liked bad vampire puns. Which we obviously don't… that would be batty.)

Fried Green Tomatoes cover

8) Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg

"It's a hot dusty American yarn of a book and a brilliant funny story!" Slink Anna

Anne Frank

9) The Diary of Anne Frank

"This might seem an odd choice for a summer read as it's non-fiction and totally heartbreaking, but I re-read it recently and was reminded of just how incredible it is. It's so well written and honest. It's funny in places and really makes you relate to a situation that would otherwise be unimaginable. Just as the diary she calls 'Kitty' is Anne's friend, Anne will become one to you too." Slink Vicki.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven cover

10) The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

Eddie dies trying to save a little girl. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is a place where your life is explained to you by five people who were in it.

This is a beautiful piece of fiction that'll have you hooked and make you think about the people you love.

"The Great Gatsby" is a fantastic book. We were studying it in my English class this year, but, far from it being stuffy and dull like some of the other books we had to read, it was really "Great"! (haha) Set in 1920's America, it's glamourous and gripping, full of the antics of high society - gossip, affairs, adultery, and, ultimately, tragedy. It had me hooked from beginning to end!!
