  • Fashion can be fair and fabulous
  • Fashion can be fair and fabulous

A fashion revolution is taking place. Designers, models and shoppers are uniting against cheap, throwaway clothes, produced by low wage workers in appalling conditions in favour of individual garments from trustworthy sources.

All the clothes featured in this shoot were made by designers who are committed to ending the exploitation of garment workers in the fashion industry.

But if you thought that ethical fashion was strictly for hippies, think again. Competition winners Rhiannon, Flora, Szjerdene, Tineka and Naomi are about to show you how to wear fair with flair.

  • Szjerdene wears...

Recycled parachute dress and petticoat, £94, Debbi Little; Denim skirt with netting, £95, Junky Styling; Goa shoes in red, £70, Terra Plana; Bracelet, £65, Made; hair and make-up by Aveda.

We had trouble getting Szjerdene to give this beautiful crushed silk ball-dress back. Former Cerruti designer Debbi Little fashions each unique piece from recycled parachute silk and the effect is simply uplifting.

Team with a tulle petticoat and stiff denim skirt to add all important volume.

The shoes are from Terra Plana, whose environmentally-friendly approach to footwear is fused with a street-wise design ethos.

Make-up: We were all a bit surprised when Aveda make-up artist Mariker applied pale lipstick to Szjerdene dark skin, but the effect was positively luminous. Try Aveda lipstick in Clover.

Grandpa top by Wildlife Works, £49, Equa boutique; Pom-pom necklace, People Tree; White bead necklace (worn as belt), People Tree; Denim shorts, Loomstate; hair and make-up by Aveda.

Flora's long legs allowed her to look great in these organic cotton shorts by Loomstate, and her classic peaches and cream complexion was complemented by the pretty long-sleeved top.

It's easy to carry shorts like these through to Winter, just wear over a pair of thick opaques or chunky ribbed tights with stacked heels or pumps.

The jewellery is from People Tree, who are committed to fair-trade. You can find them stocked in some Topshop stores.

Make up: Flora's doll-like features need blusher to lift and contour. Mariker applied a coral blush to the apple of Flora's cheeks for a fresh faced glow.

Blue plaid shrug, £80, Junky Styling; Shirt tube top, £45, Junky Styling; Recycled necklace by Krt Williams, £80, Junky Styling; Triangle Times Three necklace, £8.50, WearFair; Princess ring in black & white, £6, WearFair; Cropped jeans, Loomstate; hair and make-up by Aveda.

We couldn't believe how cute this outfit became after putting it together, and Tineka really brought the clothes to life in front of the camera.

Junky Styling in London's Brick Lane make ultra-trendy garments by cleverly re-constructing old ones. Who would have thought that a dull man's shirt could be transformed into a super-sexy tube top?!

The mix of ceramic, glass and metal jewellery adds a touch of this season's eclecticism.

Make up: Tineka has great skin and a natural glow, which made Mariker's life very easy. Just a swish of loose powder and she was ready to go!

Recycled parachute dress and petticoat, £94, Debbi Little; Brass necklace (worn around wrist), £30, Made; Glass earrings (worn in hair), £5, WearFair; Orchid shoes in yellow, £40, Terra Plana; hair and make-up by Aveda.

Some serious va-va-voom! Rhiannon was a natural in front of the camera and she looked gorgeous in this deep red silk dress, which we accessorised with funky fair trade jewellery. The colourful glass stud earrings from WearFair are hand-crafted by skilled artisans in developing countries, who receive a sustainable income for their work.

Completing the look is a pair of high heels from Terra Plana with big printed bows at the ankle for maximum attitude. These environmentally-friendly shoes have natural latex soles and use vegetable-tanned leather with minimal glue, thereby cutting down on dangerous chemicals. They are extremely loud and proud to be ethical, just like our fabulous competition winners!

Make up: Rhiannon's strong features can carry strong make-up, especially bright red lipstick, which brings her face to life. Try Aveda's lipstick in Vermillion.

Shirt dress, £75, Amira; Eco butterfly necklace (worn around wrist), £17.61, The India Shop; glass bead bracelet, £10, MADE; Jeans, Loomstate; hair and make-up by Aveda.

This green paisley shirt dress by Amira brought out Naomi's hair colour to stunning effect. Amira uses beautiful hand-picked fabrics and bright vintage buttons.

The jeans are made from organic cotton which has been grown without the use of pesticides, and the chunky green butterfly necklace is from The India Shop, whose family-run business supports rural communities in India by providing employment for local craftsmen.

Make up: Aveda's Luke wanted to give Naomi a tomboyish edge, and this rockabilly quiff fits with this season's androgyny.

Strong, directional hair needs simple make-up. Mariker carefully defined Naomi's brows but kept lips and eyes natural.
