Knives - Not just a male problem

'Amy' -that's not her real name - lives near Bristol. She used to carry a knife as she thought it could protect her. She thinks girls are a lot more violent that people imagine. Looking back she says she now feels stupid that she thought having a knife could have made her safe. The government say that by carrying a knife you are actually more likely to be attacked with a knife.

Although it is against the law to carry a knife Amy never worried about what might happen if she was stopped by the police. She risked receiving a police caution and compulsory anti-knife lessons but that didn't worry her. The maximum sentence for carrying a knife is four years and a large fine.

Ant also spoke to 16 year old Sam who says he carries a knife to feel safe - to watch his interview and the rest of our knife crime special show click here.
