The war against Iraq has begun with a limited series of strikes on the capital Baghdad. Stealth fighters and cruise missiles were used to launch an attack in the southern suburbs of the city as dawn broke.

British and American sources say that Iraqi leaders including Saddam Hussein were the targets. There has been no sign so far of the heavy wave of bombing which had been expected and military commanders say ground troops have not yet moved into Iraq.
