The
year 2002 marks the 50th anniversary of the Accession to the Throne
of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
There
is a long and unbroken tradition of celebrating Royal jubilees.
The
Queen's Golden Jubilee is a unique time in the life of the nation.
It is a time for looking back at the central role that the Queen
has played in the life of the UK and the Commonwealth over the last
50 years.
It
is also a time for looking forward and to the part the youth of
the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth will play in the future.
The
Queen has expressed the wish that the Golden Jubilee should be an
occasion for her to give thanks to the whole nation and the Commonwealth
for the support she has received during her reign.
The
main celebrations of the 50th anniversary of The Queen's Accession
to the Throne will take place between May and July 2002.
The
central weekend of the Golden Jubilee celebrations will take place
from 1 to 4 June.
Jubilee
Day will be Tuesday, 4 June, when the Queen will attend a National
Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, London.
